Well, here's the deal.

To start with, some argue that the book's fictional, but the historic details and the symbolic analysis Brown presented within that thriller are based on real references and thus are at least debatable by content.

However, whether Brown took all those analyses and historic details from actual references or are those the product of his own imagination isn't relative here at all!
You know, the man didn't claim that the novel is based on facts and went out after the release of the book demanding the international community to go find the descendants of Jesus.
He has just published a commercial work, and expected/hoped to get as much as high percentage sales as possible.
Within that work, he is free to write down whatever he'd like to!
In case he copied some content of others' works, there are rules handling this issue which should be resolved lawfully.
In case he based his story on historical facts, true that he would have then shed the light on those "forgotten" facts, but the interested on those facts should go research them and quote them from real informational references and not from a fictional book.
Imagine a person debating the genuineness of Jesus by using some excerpts from a fictional thriller aimed at the entertainment business!

At this point, I'd like to jump into more sophisticated point that could be related to the psychological aspect.

You see, Brown's case reflects actually the huge range of human intellect.
It highlights the difference between those who excel, and those who are bound to live an average life! Bound by themselves actually.

This is the way I interpret what Brown has accomplished.
He made a fortune of millions of dollars by publishing four books in a couple of years. This is not the main point however, the point I wanna stress is the way he accomplished this. It's true that he's one of the most talented and top authors in the business, but in fact, there are many others of the same caliber who weren't able to manage a similar reputation.

If you read the four novels of his, you'd realize the four of them share the exact form. Some action scenarios based on conspiracies at the highest level of administration, religious or governmental.
This stuff brings some extra audience!
The Davinci Code however was at top of those. It caught the Church's attention and every religious fanatic out there. Consequently it was discussed in the media world-wide and setting the sales rates into tremendous levels.
So, see what the man did. He used the shallowness of the Church as well as that of the anti-Christianity/Religion people to sell his book.

I'll leave the general conclusion to be deduced.
