The curse of our ancestors? Cannibals and Assassins? - 22nd July 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reflections XV

The curse of our ancestors? Cannibals and Assassins?

July 2005.
The political game remains uncovered, fully exposed… in reach yet paradoxically out of reach!!
Lying in my bed, sinking in my thoughts, half asleep, I took a piece of paper (a routine of mine) and tried to write everything which could occur on my mind concerning the famous enigma:

Why can't we succeed in building this country which was so beautiful before 1975!?

I replied to myself:

Was it so beautiful? Define Beautiful!...

All I remember is:

Scenes since the years 2000 BC,
To 1975 AD begin of war,
the sound of death,
the tears of children,
the farewells to the youth on the front,
1982 AD death of the dream,
1989 AD resurrection of the dream,
War time,
my village,
my first love,
my weapon,
the grapes and the wine yard,
running to the shelter,
my old school,
the Bible, me reading the Evangels,
running in the forest,
the feu de camp,
the guitar,
and then my farewell to my country,
my mother, my father, my sisters and brother, my friends, everyone I loved/love...

I woke up with the first sunrays on my skin, the morning wind from my window, I turned to take a look at the time and then at my piece of paper, but all I could find was only the following headwords written in a scrawl handwriting:

Fight - Corruption - War - Mercantilism - Prostitution - God - Cannabis - Blood - Killing - Savages - Martyrs -

All those above mentioned words have always been in my subconscious related to my beloved country Lebanon.

Although Lebanon inspires the Cedar, the Phoenicians, the Word, the Letter, God, Jesus Christ, Cana, South and North, the Orontes, the Pearl of the East, the Porta to the West...

I couldn’t stop thinking, erring in my thoughts, smoking a cigarette, I drove to work. Sitting on my desk, I grabbed the piece of paper out of my bag and looked at the headwords down and looked at them again and again... like a dispersed puzzle, always with this doomed question on my mind:

Have I ever had a beautiful country? Isn’t it the dream from my ancestors to my father?

No, I replied, Lebanon has always been the keyword for all above mentioned words.

When the fugitive Riva of Milan with his 16 Million Lira was seeking a shelter, he didn’t go to South America, he chose Lebanon. At that time my country was already corrupted. 30 years he stayed in my country wanted by the Italian police, without any success! He had complete protection with his bribery money. Yes, Lebanon was in 1900 corrupt and its people didn’t know anything but corruption.

Has it become en vogue in the 19th century?

I researched and found out we should have it in blood, in our DNA. From generation to generation corruption increased.

I went back to all civilizations which lived and influenced Lebanon, from the Canaanites to the Phoenicians to the Assyrians, to the Arabs, to the Romans, Greeks, Turks, French, Syria till today. Since the Phoenicians we’ve been creators of the letter, producers of the unpayable red of the Murex, but corrupt, traders of everything, our women prostituted themselves and we were savage bloody Cannibals.

The Canaanites used to sacrifice their own children and kill them for their Gods Baal and Ashtarout. It is alleged that Herod should have been a Canaanite descendant, Herod who ordered to kill savagely all children in Bethlehem. No mercy! Aren’t they still killing their children for their Gods?

War, always war, at Hannibal’s battle in Cannae, children were slaughtered, their blood watered Carthago. Each caught enemy was crucified. No mercy! On what did you build your glory? On the misery of mothers? And you think they will not curse you?

Homer described the Phoenicians as merciless. The Old Testament described our men and women, cursed from God. Tyr himself was the God of the battles! Even though God wanted to give us a chance, he tried to guide us to the salvation, to the light in our darkness, he sent us Jesus Christ to save us, to save Lebanon.
Jesus’ first miracle was in Cana, the water to wine to drunk our souls in eternal love, forgiveness. To defeat the curse!

Undefeatable curse?

Corruption, Cannibalism, Killing, War, Prostitutes, Savages, till now I found out that we are the pioneers of all those words.
And Cannabis? People call it Lebanese. You can go to Eindhoven, Berlin, Venlo and get the best Lebanese. How cheap my identity is, restricted to a green piece of drug. Lebnen L akhdar! Is this the green Lebanon my mother used to tell me tales about? As if Lebanon injected in me a drug to love it so much, could it be a Cannabis?

Here the puzzle pieces began to build a whole image.

Cannaanite, Cannae, Cannabis and Cana have the same roots to CANNIBALS! We are still Cannibals, nothing changed. Lebanon seems to have created Cannibalism. The roots of the word don’t lie in Cane (Dog) they lie in killing from the same specie. My researches to find a clarification to the roots of Cannibalism remains unsuccessful. I’m praying to God that it doesn’t lie in the curse of my ancestors.

Cannabis, Lebanese and Hashish. The sister of Cannibalism is Assassins. Another curse.
Another Ibn Al Sabah than this great Egyptian Arab who made discoveries; Ibn Al Sabah the Grand Master of the Hashashin Order from Teheran who arrived to my beloved country . The Hashahin used to drug themselves till ecstasy and kill without mercy, kill the baby being breastfed from his mother, the men resisting for the honour of their raped wives. The Hashahins never took a POW, they were all completely annihilated, abolished, dead. They were the first to blow themselves and throw themselves from hhigh places into death, long before the Kamikaz. Marco Polo mentioned them in his book during his journey to China. European unable to pronounce the “H” in Hashahin called them Assassins and they were the symbol of killing and drugs.

Did anything change in Lebanon in 2005?
Are we doomed, cursed?

The political game, my people, my country.
And
The curse of our ancestors. But maybe after all we’re neither Cannibals nor Assassins, just human having this animal deep inside like Mephisto? Akh, two hearts in this breast? The evilish and the good one?

Maybe we had a beautiful country and lived with each others peacefully?
If we did we can restore it, if we didn't we must create it.

With the blessing of the uncorruptable Cedar and the pure Sannine mountain, we may as LEBANESE sit one day on the table over Sannine's shoulders, when all of God's children will be able to sing with new meaning:

"My country is made out of you, my sweet land of liberty, for you I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the Martyr‘s pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring!"

Dedication to few members who inspired me a lot during the last 24 hours:

Thank you PrivatePOOL for your astute observation and encouraging words which are from the heart to the heart.

Thank you Bas Ba2a for you gave me to think that there exist from all Lebanese sects Lebanese who are able to feel this pride of being Lebanese and do not need a suffix, adjective, prefix to their Lebanese identity. You gave me hope that Shiite can condemn other Shiite destroying the country just like Maronites - like me - condemn other Maronites destroying the country.

Thank you Abou Jamra for I learnt from you that I must not condemn before discovering the person, that I must be patient because some people can positively surprise me and fill my heart with joy.

Thank you Comerade Bassam for your contribution in the forum which are inspiring and pure.

Thank you taifoon for your precious feed back and potential.

Thank you Lebanon_not_Arabic and 4lebanon for I don’t feel so delirious about my country’s identity at the end. :)

AND LOTS OF UNNAMED OTHERS. Thank you.

Don't worry, it's not an invasion, it's just me exploding of joy after hearing this great speech!
This is from the SHN Speech on The 9th Memorial of South Lebanon's Liberation thread

I got 11 thanks for it, my record, but I don't really know why :P

Yes, Moderators are just here to make your lives a miserable hell. We thrive on deleting posts and enjoy erasing by just one click what members have invested time and effort in.
Wherever we find a potentially "quality post", we rush to remove it, and sometimes we even organise bets on who can delete the most and fastest, especially when the posts have several "thank you's" aka "quality post indicator".
So in line with the above, any further quality post will be removed in a blink of an eye, and if there are any complaints, please do not hesitate to contact the moderator in question by PM as per Rule #18 which states:

Rule 18
18 - Complaints about the Forum
Publicly complaining about the Forum Rules and their application, or publicly asking for explanations regarding post deletion, thread removal, or the ban of another user is prohibited; the forum staff welcomes any comments and complaints as long as they are voiced in private (via private messaging).

And since this thread is all about favourite posts, hence quality posts, you just might access it to find only one post remaining in the thread, the opening one!

Thank you very much

Best regards,

Rors
