Because you can always ask a boy to do stuff for you without feeling guilty. Besides In leb society they prefer boys to girls even though as far as parents are concerned a girl is worth ten boys but you know it's a tribal thing. Blood line and pedigree even at the expense of common sense.
Another reason is what is commonly known as هم البنات للممات . So your grandmother was no different from the majority of the lebanese mothers. Another one of those aphorisms is : ابن ابني ابن القريب وابن بنتي ابن الغريب
