There's a very nice poem by Khalil Moutran, where the daughter of an executed prince removes her veil in front of all the crowds, and people ask her if she's not ashamed. The end of the poem goes: "ماكانت الحسناء ترفع سترها لو أن في هذي الجموع رجالا"

-is it in the culture of those people to have highways ?
-is it in the culture of those people to live in super deluxe villas with swiming pools and flat screen latest model TVs , laptops and internet ?
-is it in the culture of those people to travel in private jet planes ?
-is it in the culture of those people to have vacations on the most luxurious yakhts ?
- is it in the culture of those people to deal in stock markets ?
-is it in the culture of those people to have vacation in the most crazy "europeen" moun7alleh societies ?

machouna ba2a culture al !!!!! bala culture bala ballout this is evil .
You hit upon very sensitive issues...
1- Personal belongings (cars, yachts or whatever) are not a sign of cultural progress.....
2- You put all Saudis in one bucket.... (There are the tribes and non-tribes in which cultures differ humongously)
3- You proved to be extremely shallow in your thinking and I attribute that to inexperience in life.

thank you .
still i insiste as a shallow member , selling the 8 year old daughter to a 50 year old pig is evil and disgusting and against all human rights . call it culture / habit / normal / tribes / or whatever it is still a human been sold like a thing . the father consider and treat his own daughter as a personal belonging (cars, yachts or whatever) for him he might be more intrested , carefull and more protective of his cars then this little living soul .
if you were a father you might understand what i am saying but obviously you are not . as a mother myself "shallow and inexperienced mother" i cant accept nor tolerate such behavior sorry to disapoint you . i feel pity for the woman living under such retarded mentalities .

A Saudi Arabian court is to rule next month on the divorce of an eight-year-old girl from a man in his fifties.

The girl, who still does not know she is married, lives with her parents in the town of Unayzah, 135 miles north of the capital Riyadh. The marriage had been arranged in secret by her father.

She is preparing to start the new year at primary school in the town, which is located in the conservative Najd region of the country - the spiritual homeland of the Islamist Wahhabi movement that has long dominated the kingdom.

According to the Arabic-language newspaper Al-Watan, which reported the case, the divorce suit has been filed by the girl's mother.

Her relatives have contacted human rights groups in the kingdom to try to arrange legal help to annul the marriage.

However, the husband has refused, saying he has done nothing wrong.

Saudi Arabia's justice system is based on a conservative interpretation of Sharia law, but also incorporates some aspects of tribal custom from the people of the Arabian peninsula.

Polygamy is common and arranged marriages involving pre-adolescent girls and older men are occasionally reported.

The rate of child marriage rates in the Middle East is lower than in parts of Africa and south Asia, but there is a particular problem in Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

In April another eight-year-old girl won a divorce after fleeing from her husband, aged 28, and arriving in the main court in the capital Sana'a.

A United Nations report on child marriage in 2005 found that 100 million girls were expected to marry by the age of 18 before 2015. The worst countries for child marriage were Niger, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Afghanistan, India and Bangladesh.

well we were taken by the montruosity of the story and the inhumanity of a father and the alleged old husband and we simply ignored the highlighted part , obviously the MOTHER and the RELATIVES of the little girl who happen to be from the same CULTURE , REFUSE THIS DEAL . mmmmmmm wonder why ? if this is their culture and they were rased like this with this kind of values why then the mother revolte and refuse why go against this "culture" ? she must be shallow and inexperienced !

Again.... I didn't jump to conclusions..... or made any assumptions for that matter.... but trying to prove your point (obviously you're pissed) this bad is only an indication of frustration....

But if you want me to analyze, I would say
- the mother and father's marriage must've been going through problems before this particular incident
- the mother might have some other guy in her mind for her daughter (45 yrs old maybe?)

etc etc..... the point is, don't engage in assumptions cause I guarantee you that we won't be able to tell the whole story from what we read on a magazine/newspaper... I'm willing to bet that the writer added some sugar and spice to the story... and you taking sides makes you fall in the writer's trap.

As for the 'shallow' remark... it doesn't matter how many kids you have or how many people you know or even the education you've received for that matter... I apologize for being this harsh with you, but you seem to have adopted the many misconceptions our society has developed, which I tend to disagree with many of them :)

What I know for a fact is that they're more common than advertised... and yes, they do happen quite often in Lebanon

I am not interfering in their beliefs nor ever would ... or force them to do what i believe is right cause those people can't be understood ..how they think and behave though ... but i know deep in mind they are wrong...and if they think well in heart and mind and a big IF then they will know that kids have the right to live their childhood..and i don't think kids in their country are different or don't play with dolls then what do they do in their free time..be wives to elder men???..concerning what the Americans did i am not with it either..but i don't think they were there to civilize and help people they invaded the country for different reasons..they never do anything to help but for their own benifits
