Default The New Seven Wonders of the World TOTW [09.07.07 - 15.07.07] - 18th October 2006

(CLEARED by GENERAL D)

Only one of the ancient wonders of the world still survives -- now history lovers are being invited to choose a new list of seven.

Among 21 locations shortlisted for the worldwide vote is Stonehenge, the only British landmark selected.

The 5,000-year-old stones on Salisbury Plain, Wiltshire, will be up against sites including the Acropolis in Athens; the Statue of Liberty in New York; and the last remaining original wonder, the Pyramids of Giza in Cairo.

An original list of nearly 200 sites nominated by the public was narrowed to 21 by the organizers and experts, including the former director general of Unesco Professor Federico Mayor.

The vote is organized by a non-profit Swiss foundation called New7Wonders which specializes in the preservation, restoration and promotion of monuments, and the results will be announced on July 7, 2007, in Lisbon.

About 20 million votes have already been lodged, including many from India, for the Taj Mahal; China, for the Great Wall and from Peru for Machu Picchu, the fortress city of the Incas.

The other original seven wonders of the ancient world were the Hanging Gardens of Babylon; the Statue of Zeus at Olympia; the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus; the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus; the Colossus of Rhodes and the Lighthouse of Alexandria.

Tia Viering, spokeswoman for New7Wonders, said: "Apart from the Pyramids, the seven ancient wonders of the world no longer exist."

The only criteria for the new list is that the landmarks were built or discovered before 2000.

"People of England, it is now your turn to be heard," added Viering. Support Stonehenge to become one of the New Seven Wonders of the World."

Votes can be made online, at www.new7wonders.com.

The 21 finalists for the New Seven Wonders of the World, alphabetically:

1 Acropolis, Athens, Greece

2 Alhambra, Granada, Spain

I fully agree with this statement. You could add to it the statues of Liberty in New York and the statue of Christ in Rio. They are massive but hardly classify as wonders.
My vote goes for
1- the Great wall of China
Its sheer scale is awesome

2-Hagia Sophia church, Istanbul, Turkey
After 1500 years is still functional and its scale is rarely matched.

3 Angkor Wat temple, Cambodia
Very very imprssive

4 Taj Mahal, Agra, India
Beautiful building

5- Pyramids of Giza, Egypt
One must bow to the greatness of the Pharoes achievements. What went wrong?

6-Kremlin/St.Basil's, Moscow
simply stunning.

7- Alhambra, Granada, Spain
I have not seen this one but I imagine it to be a masterpiece of Islamic architecture
On reflection why isnt St Peter's cathedral on the list. As a building and artistic treasure it borders on perfection.

How is Eiffel Tower a wonder!?

I'll have to check each of the old sites to choose my wonder but If I had to choose new wonders it will definetly be a bridge or a big stadium or maybe a tall building bass not a statue! uno 3al allileh ykouno te3bo chway bil architecture!

Alhambra is a real wonder since it has 360 window, and each day the sun goes from a different window throughout the year. They haven't been able until now to really figure out how it was built. The pyramids are wonders too.

How stupid to have statue of liberty and eiffel tower, how come do they call them wonders?!

There is a wonder in ethiopia which is a river flowing uphill instead of downhill and they couldn't find the reason until now. There are lots of wonders much more tempting than many of those mentioned in their list.

Such elections are all big hoaxs. Countries that pays more get their sites on the list cz this will bring more tourists.

1st Baalback should definitely be in.
2nd If there is CHRIST STATUE OF Rio dejeneireo, then also Harissa should be in the list. The statue is bigger, and it's also build on a high mountain overlooking a beautiful bay.
I know it seems funny to have harissa between the 7 wonders of the world, but Rio is not more beautiful

Anyway for the sake of having fun, I will put my personal listing later

ba3dein much greater sites are missing, mainly "the forbiden city in china", and now in Dubai many wonders are being built (palm Islands & the world in the sea) but i think it should be build before 2000 so....
