Default 'Cross-dressing tourists' detained in Dubai - 18th July 2008

Update:DUBAI police say they have arrested 17 foreign men for allegedly being gay and wearing women's clothes in public in the Middle East tourist hub.

The men, who were either working or holidaying in Dubai according to Dubai's Criminal Investigation Department spokesman Zuhair Horoun, were arrested on Wednesday.

The arrests are part of a local campaign launched in May to stop on displays of transvestism in public places.

A report in Dubai's Gulf News said that the "cross-dressing tourists" would be deported soon.

"This is against the UAE's traditions and social values," said Dubai Police Chief, Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim.

Homosexuality is illegal in the strict Muslim city-state.

Update:Dubai has banned cross-dressing in public places after complaints of dozens of "transvestite tourists" in the city's shopping centres.

Police this week detained 40 "cross-dressing tourists", the Gulf News reported, quoting police as complaining that transvestites were frequently being spotted.

"This is against the UAE's traditions and social values," said General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, adding that action would be taken against any man or woman who behaved like the opposite gender in public.

The rulers of Dubai, which is part of the United Arab Emirates, have invested heavily in attracting foreign tourists and overseas investment as it moves away from an oil-led economy.

More than half the population of Dubai are expatriates, with 100,000 of them hailing from Britain. More than one million British people visited as tourists last year.

Bikinis are allowed on public beaches and alcohol is available. However, despite its western and cosmopolitan outlook, Dubai is a conservative Muslim society.

The move against tranvesticism comes after a British couple were arrested for allegedly having sex on a public beach.

Since then undercover police have been patrolling beaches to crack down on nudity and other forms of indecent behaviour, with a reported 80 people being detained in recent days.

Personally, I'd rather be dead.
That's not true Zayn. The "Sex Offenders List" is a list of men and women who were convicted for sexual assault and sexually abusing minors. You get a slap on the wrist (a fine or short-term jail sentence), but never listed on the Sex Offenders List.

lol Naty, not that I agree that transvestites should be arrested or whatever, but you have to be a moron to try that kind of thing in such a retarded country!

So ask yourself who's more retard in these scenarios?

I read the initial article, but hardly anything surprising there. They are talking about people who have sex on a public beach, topless women and voyeurism. And they mentioned that those people would get a warning at first. I can't see the big deal.

Actually I find the second article that Naty posted far more interesting. Saw it off yahoonews yesterday...It is really backward to discriminate against homosexuals and cross-dressers that way. Not that one should ever aim to change social norms in foreign countries, but there should be a minimum level of non-discrimination in 'modern' countries.

That must be in your state. In Michigan, you can get on the sex offenders list for being caught taking a **** outside.

It's not allowed anywhere in the world. Making out is something else and thats what ppl see in europe and west in general, but an actual sexual intercourse on the beach?? arresting these idiots makes goverment of dubai looks hypocrit? not really. Dubai is modern wether we admitt it or not. The rest of the world does, who r we to judge?

U guys should've seen their picture on 7days front page with their full names. Quiet embaressing indeed. Not only get a room i say...doing it in a 40c + and 10000% humidity climate shows how despret and frustrated those cpl were or in another words 'WASTED'. Sorry, not in Dubai.
