Can This Kitty Predict Death?

Doctors and nurses who work around him can't explain it, but say Oscar the cat seems to know when life is about to end. Oscar's spent most of his two years at Steere house, a nursing home in Rhode Island. Nurses say each time a resident is nearing the end Oscar seems to be among the first to know.

"For some reason Oscar seems to sense that is a special time. He remains with the resident, curled up on the bed, and stays there until death has occurred," explained Steere House Executive Director Steve Farrow.

The New England Journal of Medicine reports it's happened 25 times now. They do not say how many times he has not been correct. The staff can't explain it.

"As much as I'd like to say we are more accurate, it would be lying. Oscar is generally more accurate than we can be," said Dr. David Dosa.

Do animals have a sixth sense about these things? There's really no science to prove it, but doctors say they've seen plenty of examples where pets seem to know what's happening with their owners.

Dr. Farid Boughanem says twice he's seen pets with unusual behavior. Both times their owners were pregnant and didn't even know it yet.

"Probably the dog sensed some changes, maybe hormonal, maybe behavioral, we don't know," said. Dr. Boughanem.

Animals can hear sounds humans can't. Is it possible their other senses are also more alert?
Paul Donnelly says his dogs seem to be more sensitive than his cats.

"If one of us is not feeling well, the dogs will curl up at the end of the sofa, curl up at the end of the bed, and not be interested in anything other than eating," Donnelly said.

Whatever the reason, many families say they find Oscar's presence comforting.

The doctor who wrote the journal article about Oscar says people near death emit certain hormones, and Oscar may be able to detect them. Also, many nursing homes will place electric blankets to warm people that are close to passing; that may also be something that the cat is attracted to.

I'm the new tallest man in the world
Thursday, April 16, 2009

A basketball player who went to hospital for foot surgery suddenly grew to a whole new station in life – the world's tallest man.

Zhao Liang is 2.46m (8.07ft) tall, putting him 10cm (3.9in) above the current record-holder, Bao Xishun.

The huge sportsman, who puts away eight burger-sized steamed buns and three plates of food for dinner, has average-sized parents.

And, like any other mother, Wang Keyun frets for her 27-year-old son.

She said: 'I am so worried about his marriage, job and his health that my hair has turned white.'

Mr Zhao was training as a basketball player when he hurt the tendon in his left foot a decade ago. He languished in unemployment until 2006, when he started working with a street art troupe.

He performed magic tricks and played the saxophone with the group until his painful foot became too much for him.

But when he hobbled into the Tianjin hospital for his operation, he caused a stir once again.

Hospital staff excitedly got him measured properly in the midst of a media circus. Despite the furore, doctors managed to treat him and declared his operation a success.

Mr Zhao, whose huge stature gives him no major health issues, will be fully mobile in a couple of months.

Although Mr Zhao, from Henan province, is far taller than Mr Bao he has yet to be measured by staff from Guinness World Records. He is now seeking official recognition.

World's Most Heavily Pierced Woman

In early 2009, Guinness World Records certified that Brazilian-born nurse Elaine Davidson sported 6,005 piercings, including 1,500 that are internal.

The Brazilian-born nurse earned the "Most Heavily Pierced" title in 2000, when she had a mere 462 pieces of hardware on her body, 192 just on her face.

...........

This woman is crazy ... and very disgusting

Shark 'dumped' on Australia paper

Police in Australia say they are "dumbfounded" by the dumping of a live shark on the doorstep of a newspaper in Victoria state.

The two-foot (60cm) creature was found lying at the front door of The Standard in Warrnambool city under cover of darkness after midnight on Wednesday.

The fish - a Port Jackson shark - was said to be relatively harmless.

Police released it into the harbour after carrying it in a bucket of water borrowed from a McDonald's restaurant.

Police said the juvenile Port Jackson shark - a common species on Australia's south coast - was spotted in the early hours of Thursday by a man leaving the fast-food restaurant, located next door to the offices of The Standard.

'Still breathing'

"We arrived and poured some water on it just to see if it was still breathing and it kicked around for a little while," Constable Jarrod Dwyer told state radio.
He said the newspaper had no idea why anyone would leave the shark there to die.

"They had no ideas of any person that wished them any harm or wished to send them any type of message, so we're a little dumbfounded," he said.

Port Jackson sharks can grow up to 1.6m long (5.5 ft). They typically feed on crustaceans, sea urchins and fish.

Constable Dwyer's partner, Acting Sgt Greg Cresell, told the Warrnambool Standard that it was one of the most bizarre incidents he had come across in his time as a police officer.

"We've had some strange things in the van before, but never a shark," he said.

A fisheries official told the paper that the sharks were harmless, except for two venomous dorsal spines.

Authorities have vowed to charge the offenders with animal cruelty, if they find those responsible for dumping the shark.

Birds show off their dance moves

Some birds have a remarkable talent for dancing, two studies published in Current Biology suggest.

Footage revealed that some parrots have a near-perfect sense of rhythm; swaying their bodies, bobbing their heads and tapping their feet in time to a beat.

Previously, it was thought that only humans had the ability to groove.

The researchers believe the findings could help shed light on how our relationship with music and the capacity to dance came about.

One bird, Snowball, a sulphur-crested cockatoo (Cacatua galerita eleanora ), came to the researchers' attention after YouTube footage suggested he might have a certain prowess for dance - especially when listening to Everybody by the Backstreet Boys.

Dr Aniruddh Patel, from The Neurosciences Institute in San Diego, said: "We found out that the previous owner usually listened to easy listening music, but he did have this one album, and he noticed Snowball bobbing his head to the Backstreet Boys."

To test Snowball's skill, the scientists filmed him as they played his favourite song at various tempos.

Dr Patel told the BBC: "We analysed these videos frame by frame, and we found he did synchronise - he did slow down and speed up in time with the music.

"It was really surprising that he had this flexibility."

Song and dance

The scientists believe that the parrots' apparent capacity for dance may be linked to another talent that they share with humans - the ability for vocal learning and vocal imitation.

They believe the part of the brain that evolved to allow us and a handful of other species, including dolphins, songbirds, elephants and some cetaceans, to learn and mimic different sounds may also be responsible for the ability to move in time to music.

To test whether this might be the case, the researchers turned to a vast resource of animal footage - YouTube.

From more than 1,000 videos of different dancing animals, the team found only 33 films that showed animals moving in time to a musical beat.

Dr Patel said: "These 15 species were all vocal learners - 14 parrots and one Asian elephant."

After these initial studies, both teams now want to look more closely at different species' relationship with music.

Dr Patel told BBC News: "No other primates, besides humans, have vocal learning, so there is a strong prediction that no other primates could learn to synchronise to music, even with extensive training.

"However, there are other mammals that have a response to vocal learning - dolphins are a notable category, and I'd love to collaborate with dolphin researchers to find out if dolphins can move to a musical beat."

The scientists believe further research will also provide an insight into how our relationship with music evolved.

Dr Patel said: "Music is a true human universal - it is something we find in every single human culture.

"One of the questions we are asking is whether this is wired into our brains because of evolution, or is it because it builds on other brain systems.

"And this evidence builds on the fact that it is probably linked to other existing brains systems rather than being an adaptation in its own right."

He adds: "You see here a fundamental response to music seen in species that normally don't have a relationship to music in the world.

"They are clearly using a brain system that has a different day job, so to speak."
