i dont think a player who manages to get a red card in the fianl purely out of idiocy desreves to be called the best of the tournament.

at least adidas is happy. lets see what nike can come up with now

BERLIN, July 10 (Reuters) - France captain Zinedine Zidane won the FIFA Golden Ball award as the outstanding player of the World Cup despite being sent off in their final penalties shootout defeat by Italy on Sunday.

The prize is decided by media votes at the tournament. Zidane received 2,012, Italian captain Fabio Cannavaro finished second (1,977) and his team mate Andrea Pirlo was third (715).
enno it was known that whoever lost the final would get the best player award but i certainly wouldnt have given it to zidane, not after what he did
thats really not very fair

Zidane's act was totally unjustifiable !!!!!

Its a shame to end his career like that and this will be a smear to be remembered all the time.

The Italian guy can say anything he wants it doesn't matter! This is professional football and not street football.

Thats from an Italian site ..Im not sure i just put what i heard bit its not official from FIFA !

From the labial of the video Materazzi said in Italian: "Go, Be a phenomenon, go... Yeah, Yeah. Be a phenomenon" after that Zidane turn on himself an with his head hit the Italian player in his chest.
It could also be: "Eh, You feel like you are a phenomenon, eh."

on another forum this was posted

The Guardian is reporting that Materazzi called Zidane a terrorist.

GUARDIAN, MATERAZZI A ZIDANE: 'TERRORISTA'

La reazione di Zidane contro Materazzi sarebbe stata provocata dalla parola 'terrorista' che il calciatore italiano avrebbe rivolto al capitano francese. Lo sostiene l' edizione 'on line' del quotidiano britannico 'The Guardian'. Zidane - scrive il quotidiano - "é stato certamente provocato, ci sono stati accenni la scorsa notte che Materazzi l' abbia chiamato 'un terrorista', ma Zidane avrà ragione di maledire la sua stupida reazione".

French boss slams Materazzi Monday 10 July, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

France boss Raymond Domenech has defended the actions of disgraced ace Zinedine Zidane by laying the blame of his dismissal on Marco Materazzi.

Zizou ended his career in dramatic fashion as after giving his side the lead in the World Cup Final, he departed the game with a red card following a head-butt on the Inter stopper in extra time.

“Andrea Pirlo was given the Man of the Match award, but it should have gone to Materazzi,” Domenech ironically stated.

“When someone has to put up with what Zidane had to and the referee doesn’t do anything then one understands.

“You can’t excuse it, but you can understand it.”

It’s unclear at this stage what exactly happened between the two players for Zidane to react in such a manner, even if it seems that the former Juventus playmaker may have reacted to verbal provocation.

“Something must have happened even if I don’t know what,” added the Les Bleus tactician. “But I don’t think he decided to head-butt him for no reason, something must have occurred.

“To see him finish playing in this way is sad as he’s had a great career and World Cup,” added the Coach.

Zidane was not immediately dismissed and Domenech has confirmed that a form of instant video evidence was used on the sidelines.

“The referee and the assistant didn’t see it,” he revealed. “Then the fourth official saw the television replay and told the referee

I think Zidane was crazy or affected for not be winning, because I think it's not very probable a french understands what "Fai il fenomeno dai... sì sì fai il fenomeno" means... And this is not so offensive like that!
Zidane heard Materrazzi saying him something, he got nervous, and zás!

The act was unacceptable, but if Materazzi called him Terrorist, then he should be punished too. Terrorist is a very-very bad word to call to someone.
