Default Rugby In Lebanon - 1st November 2005

When I first came to the United States the last thing I expected was to find that Rugby was infact a popular sport around here. Not as popular as football and baseball but it is popular enough. I joined my universities team and I know play as a flanker or outside center. Anyway I heard that the universities in Lebanon also have teams, but how many? And how is this sport developing in Lebanon? It would be interesting to know.

http://www.lebrl.com/ check that link out it will give you some more info. Also there is a team in Australia that is made entirely of people with Lebanese heritage. I think they're called the cedars. Cool sports, pretty big in some parts of Canada.

I think they're the ones that played France and won them. I remember that I watched a game between Lebanon and France two years ago but then I had no clue of what was going on.

Thumbs up Re: Rugby In Lebanon - 1st November 2005

Yes, the Lebanese Rugby team is quite a good team. The selection mostly consists of Lebanese nationals playing in Australia or elsewhere, professionally for the majority. But I do know that the game is catching up in Lebanon. Unfortunately it is not receiving good support from the Youth ministry, I know there was a tournement scheduled in Lebanon but they were denied the right to use the Municipal Beirut field (el mal3ab el baladi) citing grass maintenance reasons, only for a football game to take place the next day.. very sad, considering Rugby in Lebanon is doing SO MUCH more with so much less.

I dont know much about Rugby in Lebanon, but I remember when I was at AUB the AUB had a Rugby team and they constantly practiced and participated in tournaments.

From what I see, this game could have potential in Lebanon, becuase first of all it's a really violent game and as we all know we Lebanese like violence. And second of all because we're good at it obviously. If it could get some media attention then it could go places.
