Holland squeeze into the quarters in olympic football -
13th August 2008
The Dutch made it to the quarterfinals after a hard fought victory over Japan 1-0 in their final group B encounter. The Netherlands edged over the U.S to snatch 2nd place after the U.S suffered defeat to group leaders Nigeria 1-2.
Holland although started the game as favourites found it difficult to break the Japanese defense. In the 2nd half, the Dutch pressed more forward but it was Japan with the constant threat. Drenthe and Tokoyodo both hit the post and Vermeer came with an outstanding save for the Dutch.
The 71st minute witnessed a fast break by Ryan Babel on the right side and into the box only to be pulled down by the Japanese defender. Penalty was taken by Gerald Sibon who made it 1-0. Knowing the score from the other game, the Dutch pulled backwards and managed to keep the score.
Holland will play Argentina in the quarters in what promises to be a real cracker.
Brasil won over China 3 - 0
It will face Cameroon in the quarters.
