Grand Prix Lebanon, why not?!

I remember when there used to be some talks about making a grand prix track in Lebanon (it was somehow half true - half gossip).

This post belongs in the sports and the fly to lebanon sections equally, but anyhow, few days ago, there was the Hungarian Grand Prix, and there were 400,000 spectators!!!

That's a huge income to get for the country, as well as a mega huge boost for Sports in Lebanon and Lebanon's name in the international sports area.

So why can't we work on such a project in Lebanon? There are plenty of amazing places to put the tracks, followed with scenery and archeological sites.

Or we can even build an archeological replica in the middle of the ring, and make it beautifully themed.

What do you think about it? And does anyone know the proceedings for a country to be accepted as official grand prix host?

و قد قال أسامة قباني مسؤول الادارة المدنية في سوليدير:"لا أعتقد أن السباقات ستبدأ قبل أربعة أعوام,لكن الفيا تتطلع الى الشرق الأوسط. المناخ في بيروت أفضل من دبي,و كثافة السيارات اقل من القاهرة".

لم يفصح قباني عت الكلفة التقريبية للمشروع,لكنه أضاف:"تعتبر الكلفة قليلة بالمقارنة مع العائدات التي ستجنيها المدينة من سباقات الفورمولا واحد.

كما أكد أن وفداً من الشركة سيسافر الى أوروبا ليلتقي "الفيا" و يريهم المخطط النهائي للحلبة.

و كان رئيس الفيا برني أكلستون قد أعلن في وقت متقدم من هذا العام أن موسكو ممكن ان تستضيف سباقاْ للفورمولا واحد حالما تبنى حلبة في المدينة, و اقترح أن السباق سيكون جاهزا بدءاْ من العام 2003. كما أنه في صدد زيارة حلبة "زاندفورت" البحرية في هولندا هذا الصيف ليتحدث مع مسؤولي الحلبة عن حظوظ اعادة تنظيم غران بري هناك.

أرسل رئيس الفورمولا واحد برني إيكلستون تحذيراً الى شركات التنظيم الأوروبية قائلاً بأن لا يكونوا واثقين من أنفسهم حيال طموحاتهم في البقاء في سباقات الفورمولا واحد لأن عدة دول خاصة في الشرق الأوسط تطلب أن تصير ضمن جدول الدول التي تستضيف هذه سباقات. بعض الدول مثل لبنان، الصين، البحرين، روسيا، ودبي قدمت مخططات لبناء حلبات سباق من أجل تحقيقها في المستقبل، لذلك حذر إيكلستون المنظمين الأوروبيين للسباقات أن حالتهم يمكن أن تمهد الطريق لمنظمين آخرين. يقول إيكلستون :"هناك سباقات غير حصينة في أوروبا. يجب نقل السباقات الى أماكن جيدة حيث يمكن للفِرق أن تحصل على شركات راعية. لا وجود لأي منظم أوروبي واثق إيجاد الشركات الراعية في حين أن بعض الدول الجديدة ستحاول حتى الموت الحصول على دور في البطولة." لقد تم تحسين وتطوير بعض الحلبات مثل نوربورغ رينغ وسيلفرستون وهذا على الأرجح يضمن بقاء وإستمرارية إستعمالها في الفورمولا واحد.

I second you chief, it was not a gossip. BUt given the countinuos bad situation in lebanon, the fia had to choose between Lebanon, dubai and bahrain and it has chosen bahrain.

It is really unfrotunate for us for not being chosen as one of the 16 or 17 countries to organize this big event, and now another arabic country will begin to host an F1 stage as of next season which is UAE in Abu Dhabi emirate exactly.

I remember also that the FIA was one step close to choose "rally du Liban" as one stage of the WRC annual championship.

It is just too bad for us to have constant wars and unstable situation in our country. really 7aram.

actually as zouxi stated , we were closer to host a stage of the world rally championship than hosting anf f1 race. Unfortunately, here again, we lost the dual to jordan that was added in the WRC 2008 calendar

We can't host anything when we can't garantee security or peace. All chances in hosting anything internation are doomed after the syrians that were "maintaining" peace are gone

As long as the current global situtation in Lebanon remains as it is, we will never have a Grand Prix, nor a WRC stage nor anything else ...

Maybe in 10 years ... Hopefully ...

u know all the tourists that go to bahrain visit that track, and thet built it next to manama where there was nothing except a desert, and when ur there u can c the track from many kilometers away,they gained alot of monet because of it

Who will present the trophy? We can't allow a Syrian-backed President to present the trophy. The second point is that we have to keep in mind that our Prime Minister doesn't sit in the same area, so basically, you'll need 2 VIP sections.

Then, we will have to check what are the effects of Taef on who presents what trophy.

After that, we will have to decide about the commissions. If the track is in Solidere Land, then there's an increasing quota for Solidere every year. Solidere's quota is untaxable. The rest is distributed between the private companies working on the project: Ogero for all the telephony infrastructure, other Khaliji companies for the rest of the infrastructure since we do not possess the required skills in Lebanon. Finally, the project is funded by the Mediterranean Bank and the yearly interest shall be paid from the government's quota, of course. The Mediterranean Bank's interest rate is currently (and just for today so we can sign the deal) at 24% because we cannot raise it to 42% anymore like we did in the 90s because we're not in complete control of the country.

The only problem we have is that the Syrian-backed political parties in Lebanon, such as HA and FPM will not back us up on this great project that will unite the Lebanese about Lebanon the country, and disarm all the militias.

What do you suggest?

We all wish to host a GP in Lebanon, i've been to Indy, Montreal and Istanbul and i can tell you the revenues from hosting GPs(not just F1, but GP2 and other secondary series) is huge and we would benefit alot.

Yet sadly the situation does not allow us, PM Hariri met with bernie ecclestone about 2 or 3 times in London and the main reason F1 supremo stressed on was the political situation in lebanon and the possibility of having a war at any time (that was proved last summer).

As for the technical parts, starting with the track, i can tell you such a track will never pass the FIA tests, it is flawed because a Beirut GP will have to be a street circuit, and looking at the track it is high speed which makes it impossible to happen.

Moving along, the circuit designers these days prefer to throw corners here and there to slow the cars down, hence why we had hockenheim cut down to reduce speed and why monza had a tough chicane added couple of years ago.

Mister Tilke who designed the Turkish, Bahraini and Chinese GP is probably the best in the world right now, somewhat a "Mickey mouse" track-like designer, neverless famous and proved to be able to build good "safe" tracks.
