Both of you, people win medals not countries.
Most medals are won in individual games and have nothing to do with citizenship.

It has alot to do with the funding and training the athlete gets from his country.

Yes of course but at the end between all the countries that fund their athletes the winner is the athlete himself and not his country nor his sponsor, at the very top they all train the same whether it is Usain Bolt from Jamaica or Tyson Gay from the US, whether it is Alexandre Despaties or another Chinese Diver. The best are funded by their countries but the best of the best get the top 3 medals. Bottom line athletes win medals not countries

GO STATES
The US is the only country in the world that ranks countries according to the total number of medals each country wins. Even France, that would be much better off in a similar way of counting, doesn't!

China won this year, get over it!

Actually NBC even pointed out the medal tallys had team gold medals were counted fully and not as individual medals, and the US ends up with something like 300+ golds and China with 200 golds.

Ironically enough, the Olympics are one of the biggest spectacles of jingoism and nationalism, completely contrary to what they are supposed to represent. It makes it much harder to appreciate the competitions.

Actually I didn't complain about anything until the Americans start talking about how "they won"...

It's pretty hilarious! And that's exactly the kind of unsportsmanlike behavior that we need to get rid of!

To be fair though, they have been ranking countries based on the total number of medals for a long time now, so it's not a new thing. It's stupid I know, but at least they are consistent.

In any case, I still think the Olympics are a nationalistic mess, and not just because of American attitude.

I agree with you. But logically, let's say the total number of medals is relevant, how can a bronze medal be equal to a gold. There's 10 medals difference between the two. But China has 15 gold medals more than the US...

Champions are always remembered. Who ever remembered the 2nd or 3rd in a competition? They are less important!

Calm down, it's just a game and after all what really matters are the people who got the medals , they will feel that they have achieved something they dreamed of. Medal countings just come and go, if you really think about it, this will go forever, that country wins and fifty years later another country, and so on. It just goes on.
I agree though, what this event is really about is the fun, ( ofcourse the fun includes the intensity of the competition between countries) but eventually, it's about the fun. Who cares if USA gets more medals than Malta ?

Anyway , even if you want to talk about who got more medals and such, well it's kind of funny; China dominated gymnastics and diving almost completely, and those depend on points given by judges. Hell even in boxing, China got 2 gold medals, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze and topped the table, and in their whole boxing career in Olympics they only had 1 bronze , and boxing counts on judge points too. Anyway, take aside the "bias" , the competition is on their homeland after all. meh !
