Three yellow cards - but referee Poll may end up with a red
IT WAS a red-letter day for Australia amid controversy over red cards. English referee Graham Poll appeared to show Australian-born Croatian Josip Simunic three yellow cards before sending him off, two during the closing stages of the match and a third after the final whistle. Simunic remained on the field after the second yellow.
It seems that when Poll showed Simunic his second yellow in the 90th minute he forgot about the first. FIFA will scrutinise the DVD of Simunic's first booking to determine if Poll had shown Simunic or another player the yellow card.
FIFA president Sepp Blatter said: "I cannot understand how the four people in the team refereeing the match, the referee, the assistants and the fourth official could have allowed this to happen. It is like they had a blackout."
Had Australia lost and protested, FIFA would have been likely to order a replay.
