CANADIAN MEN DEFEAT LEBANON IN OPENER OF JACK DONOHUE INTERNATIONAL CLASSIC

Last Updated: July 01, 2008

HAMILTON — With the clock winding down at the end of the first quarter, Canada’s Senior Men’s National team found themselves in exactly the type of situation that has proved problematic in the past – trying to find a way to score.

This time however, the ball made its way into the hands of a familiar face, who calmly broke his man down off the dribble and stroked a jumper that fell perfectly through the net, just as the buzzer sounded.

Rowan Barrett returned to the Canadian men’s basketball team to bring experience and poise to a relatively young squad. Despite a five-year hiatus, the Toronto native didn’t seem to miss a step Monday, making a triumphant return by keying Canada to a thorough 89-67 victory over Lebanon in the first game of the Jack Donohue International Classic (JDIC).

Barrett, who was named player of the game, finished with 16 points, 13 of which came in the first half. Carl English led Canada with 18 points in a balanced attack that saw Samuel Dalembert collect 10 points and 11 rebounds while fellow NBA centre Joel Anthony had 9 points and 9 rebounds for the host team.

"I was happy with the effort," said Canadian head coach Leo Rautins. "We made mistakes, but the first game you're going to make mistakes. I thought there were too many fouls at the defensive end, but everybody was trying to make the extra pass, trying to move the ball. I thought we had spurts where we were trying to get after people.

"You're not going to be perfect right now but I was happy with the effort the first game."

A raucous crowd of 1200 fans (including a particularly enthusiastic Lebanese contingent) took in the match within the cozy confines of McMaster University’s Burridge Gym.

Canada led for all but 17 seconds of the game, finishing the first quarter up by three before stretching that to a comfortable 15-point margin by halftime.

Fadi El Khatib led all scorers with 20 points for Lebanon in the losing cause. The recently crowned West Asian Champions found themselves manhandled both inside and out by Canada, as the frontcourt duo of Dalembert and Anthony provided a 41-28 rebounding edge for the Canadians, while the hosts also shot a sizzling 14-of-26 from three point range.

"It's fun, it was a great feeling, the national anthem, all those eerie feelings keep coming back," Barrett said after the game. "This is a team on a mission, we're focused on [the Olympics].

"We have a lot of things to clean up, and as the level of competition rises, our margin for error is going to be less and less,” said the 35-year-old national team veteran. “These games are the ones we can take to clean stuff up.”

The three JDIC teams will all be competing in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament later this month, where the top three finishers will earn a berth in the 2008 Olympic Summer games.

Canada will return to McMaster on Tuesday to face New Zealand in the second game of the domestic exhibition series, then have two days off before the trio of teams make a trip up the highway to Toronto for a second round of matches at Ricoh Coliseum, July 4-5.

TALL BLACKS DOWN LEBANON 84-71 IN THIRD GAME OF JACK DONOHUE INTERNATIONAL CLASSIC

By Simon Yau
Last Updated: July 03, 2008

HAMILTON — Down 12-4 right out of the gate and with Lebanese players putting on what appeared to be a lay up clinic, New Zealand men’s national team head coach Nenad Vucinic called a quick timeout and shook his head in frustration.

It seemed as if it would be another long game for the Kiwi’s, but despite a slow start and rambunctious pro-Lebanon crowd, the Tall Blacks managed to come all the way back to earn a comfortable 84-71 victory in the second game of the Jack Donohue International Classic, the third match of the domestic event held at McMaster University.

The victory marked the first win of the summer for Vucinic and his Tall Blacks, a heavy burden off their shoulders after two thorough drubbings at the hands of Australia and a third blow out by Canada in the team’s three previous matches.

“Yes, the opposition wasn’t as good as the first three games, especially defensively,” conceded Vucinic. “Australia is probably one of the best defensive teams in the world and Canada is very athletic.

“We lack a bit of size and athleticism, but we have to make that up with execution and mental toughness, and tonight after a really slow start I thought we came and showed some guts and played a good game of basketball,” said the Kiwi coach.

The game was a see-saw affair that saw eight ties and 10 lead changes before a 15-5 run by the Tall Blacks broke the game open to start the fourth quarter.

Forward Craig Bradshaw led a balanced attack for New Zealand with 18 points and 5 rebounds, while Kirk Penney added 17 to the cause.

Lebanon, despite being under sized, managed to out rebound New Zealand 32-27, while also seeming to get to the rim at will. Rony Fahed had a spectacular game for the losing team, leading all scorers with 20 points and adding 7 rebounds, 7 assists and two steals while shooting over 50% from the field.

Unfortunately for Lebanon, Fahed was a one man show on this night, with his near triple double not enough to overcome a 27-17 disparity in points off the bench for New Zealand. Overall, Lebanon shot only 31% from three point range and 67% from the charity stripe, not nearly enough to overcome an 11-trey barrage by the Kiwi’s.

Vucinic was not taking much time to bask in the victory however, as his Tall Blacks gave the ball away 20 times on the night, but saw most of those mishaps negated by Lebanon’s own turnover woes (17 for the game).

“With a young internationally inexperienced team that will happen, but we haven’t got a whole lot of time,” explained the coach. “In the next game against Canada we have to really execute even better and cut the turnovers down.”

New Zealand will attempt to avenge their loss to the host team when they face Canada again on July 4 at Toronto’s Ricoh Coliseum.

Lebanon will now have two days to rest before they also get a second crack at the host team, with the fifth and final game of the JDIC scheduled to be a Lebanon vs. Canada showdown on July 5, also at Ricoh Coliseum.

Canada routs Lebanon 100-68 to conclude Jack Donohue tournament
July 5, 2008

TORONTO - The Canadian national men's basketball team can breathe a sigh of relief.

One night after an ugly 77-69 loss against unheralded New Zealand, Canada took a step in the right direction on the eve of its trip to Europe for Olympic qualifying with a convincing 100-68 win over Lebanon in the final game of the Jack Donohue International Classic Saturday night at Ricoh Coliseum.

"I feel good," Canadian coach Leo Rautins said after his team finished 3-1 at the event against New Zealand and Lebanon, two long shots at Olympic qualifying.

"Friday was kind of an embarrassment. I think it's an anomaly for our team, that's not our team. We have to clean a lot of things up, but I haven't changed my mind about this team. Everything I felt coming in I still feel. I think, this team, if they stay focused, stay committed and realize we have no room to monkey around, we can accomplish this thing."

That will be easier said than done as Canada attempts to earn one of just three Olympic berths in the 12-team, last-chance qualifying tournament, July 14-20 in Athens.

Canada travels to Germany on Sunday to prepare for exhibition games against the talented German squad on Wednesday and Friday before opening the qualifier on July 15 against Slovenia.

While Canada earned full marks in its blowout against Lebanon, it will be much tougher to beat out dangerous opponents like Slovenia, Brazil, Croatia, Germany and Greece in Athens.

"You're always going to feel like an underdog if you're coming from Canada playing basketball, it's not the sport here," said Canadian guard Rowan Barrett, who was honoured for playing his 120th game with the national team Saturday.

"You ask Croatians or Yugoslavian guys, they're celebrated in their country, they're an institution. They never feel like an underdog. Here, basketball is growing and we're trying to do our part to help it grow. There might be some underdog status there. But there is a lot of heart within this team. That Canadian grit has been here. Guys were out playing hockey, guys were taking guys into the boards. That's still in us."

Canada's biggest strength will be its frountcourt. Playing without resting star centre Samuel Dalembert of the Philadelphia 76ers for the second game in a row, Canada relied on starting big men Joel Anthony (11 points) of the Miami Heat and Levon Kendall (14) for much of its offence in a dominant 59-point first half in which it shot 57 per cent.

Forward Dave Thomas of Brampton, Ont., led Canada with 17 points as the home side responded to Rautins' desire to run a fast-paced offence.

With an emerging swingman in Olu Famutimi and a promising point guard in Jermaine Anderson, Barrett feels Canada has the roster to make some noise in Athens even without two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash, whose days with the national team appear to be over.

"This team is deeper and more talented than our group from 2000," Barrett said in comparing this team to the last Canadian squad to make the Olympics. "Our starting five, I would put up against anybody at any time."

The frontcourt will face a much stiffer test against a German team led by Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki and Chris Kaman of the Los Angeles Clippers.

"The competition goes up a notch," Rautins said. "It's more size, more finding out who we are. We're still looking at what combinations (to use), we're still waiting to get guys healthy and in a rhythm."

That includes Dalembert, who isn't at 100 per cent after playing just five minutes in the second game of the Donohue event on Canada Day. Rautins said Dalembert and forward Jesse Young (hamstring) will return to practice Monday in Germany.

After facing Slovenia, Canada squares off against Korea on July 16. The Canadians will need at least one win in those two games to secure a spot in the sudden-death, eight-team playoffs.

Canada made one roster change before the game against Lebanon, replacing forward Juan Mendez of Niagara Falls, Ont., with Rans Brempong of Brampton, Ont.

"If it's not working, we have the ability now to make changes and do things," Rautins said, "whereas a couple years ago, whatever was there we took."

It seems like Brazil is less invincible if the NBA players don't suit up..
