SEOUL: North Korea on Sunday welcomed its removal from Washington's terrorism blacklist and said it would resume disabling its nuclear weapons facilities, allowing American and United Nations monitors back into its main nuclear complex.
The United States announced Saturday that it had removed North Korea from a list of state sponsors of terrorism. In return, North Korea said Sunday that it would resume disabling a plutonium plant and other key facilities at its nuclear complex in Yongbyon, north of Pyongyang, and allow some inspections to verify the process.
It was a deal that had benefits for both Washington and Pyongyang.
The administration of President George W. Bush avoids the embarrassment of seeing the nuclear disarmament deal with the North, billed as a key diplomatic achievement, collapse in its last months. And North Korea begins to shed a 20-year worldwide stigma that has deepened its isolation from international aid and banking systems.
