If it makes you feel any better she meant Iranian Hezbollah.

And why did you have to argue with her?

Didn't you ask her because you believed she knew the correct answer?

Iran resumes mass trial of reformists

CNN) -- Iran resumed Tuesday its mass trial of political reformists it has accused of trying to overthrow the government in the wake of the disputed presidential election in June, according to state-run media reports.

The nearly 100 people on trial in Iran's Revolutionary Court include journalists, reformist leaders, and former government ministers.

Saeed Hajjarian, a reformist journalist and former adviser to President Mohammed Khatami, testified during Tuesday's court session, according to Fars News Agency.

He "confessed" that he met with Kian Tajbakhsh, an Iranian-American who is also on trial, "in a bid to stage a velvet revolution in Iran," Fars reported.

"During the meetings we agreed to activate NGOs (non-governmental organizations) in Iran and also we aimed to reinforce the civil society (for civil disobedience)," Hajjarian was quoted by Fars as testifying.

"We were also supposed to use the experiences of the Soros Foundation in staging a velvet revolution," he added.

Tajbakhsh was an independent consultant and urban planner employed by U.S. philanthropist George Soros' Open Society Institute. When contacted by CNN, a spokeswoman for the Soros Foundation said they are aware of the report and are working on a statement in response to the allegation.

Tajbakhsh -- the only American on trial in Tehran -- resigned from his position with the foundation after he was arrested and detained for four months in 2007 on unspecified charges. He holds dual citizenship in Iran and the United States.

Earlier this month, the State Department expressed its deep concern over Tajbakhsh's detention and trial, and has called on Iran to release him.

He is one of more than 1,000 people arrested after a massive government crackdown following the June 12 election.

Iran's election authority declared incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad the overwhelming winner of the race. Opposition supporters accused the government of fraud.

Among the defendants who have been on trial this month are Seyyed Mohammad Abtahi, a former Iranian vice president; and Maziar Bahari, an Iranian-Canadian reporter for Newsweek magazine.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the trial, which began earlier this month, is a "sign of weakness" and shows that the Islamic republic "is afraid of its own people."

"It is a show trial, there's no doubt about it," Clinton told CNN's Fareed Zakaria on his "GPS" program. "It demonstrates I think better than any of us could ever say that this Iranian leadership is afraid of their own people, and afraid of the truth and the facts coming out."

Iran MP says rape of some vote detainees proven
Thu Aug 27, 2009 8:34am EDT

TEHRAN (Reuters) - The rape of some Iranian reformers jailed after the presidential vote has been proven to a parliamentary committee, a lawmaker who asked to remain anonymous was quoted as saying on a website on Thursday.
"Raping of some (vote) detainees through baton and soda bottle has been proven to us," the Parlemantnews website quoted the member of the investigative committee as saying.

Iran's moderate defeated presidential candidate Mehdi Karoubi had raised allegations that some of those detained after the disputed vote were raped.

Ayatollah: U.S., UK not meddling in Iran

TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) -- Foreign influences are not to blame for Iran's post-election violence, the nation's supreme leader has said, according to state-run media.

Ayatollah Khamenei warned that courts should not use "rumors" to prosecute alleged post-election detainees.

"I don't accuse the leaders of the recent incidents of being affiliated with foreign countries, including the United States and Britain, since the issue has not been proven for me," Ayatollah Khamenei told a group of university students on Wednesday, Iran's Islamic Republic News Agency reported.

"But there is no doubt that the events were planned, no matter whether their leaders knew it or not."

Iranian officials, including hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, have previously claimed that nations such as the United States and Britain have meddled in Iranian affairs since elections in June, without offering proof. Ahmadinejad has has warned of repercussions over the alleged meddling.

Gholam-Hosein Mohseni Ejei, Iran's intelligence minister, on Sunday blamed Western powers for stirring up protests. The British Embassy in Tehran "played a heavy role in the recent disturbances," he said, adding that the United States led the effort.

"The fact that Iran is stable, calm and secure, they're upset with this," Ejei told Iran's Press TV in late June.

Hundreds of thousands of Iranians took to the streets for more than two weeks to protest the June 12 election results, calling them fraudulent after Ahmadinejad was declared the overwhelming winner.

More than 1,000 people were arrested in a government crackdown, and Iran said at least 30 people were killed in post-election violence.

More than 100 Iranians are going through mass trials this month. Top military officials have called for faster prosecutions and demanded "swift retribution" for post-election detainees, Iranian media have reported.

Two opposition leaders unsuccessfully challenged the results for weeks, and Ahmadinejad was sworn in for his second term in early August.

Brig. Gen. Yadollah Javani, head of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps -- a branch of the armed forces -- has blamed candidates Mir Hossein Moussavi and Mehdi Karroubi, who called the election fraudulent, for the violence that plagued the protests.

The government has gone after the protesters themselves in mass trials that have been denounced internationally. Among those appearing in court are two French and British embassy employees and a French citizen.

Iran has said that many of the defendants have confessed to helping Britain and the United States instigate the unrest.

that reminds me of Marwan Hmade and Fares Khashan when they dumped the newspapers and brainwashed the lebanese people regarding Hariri's Assassination. They had "evidences" that Lahoud and the 4 generals killed Hariri, and they were ready to "prove them". At the end, they proved that they are just a bunch of liars.

Iran prisoner beaten to death, coroner says

(CNN) -- A coroner's report says that a man arrested in the violent aftermath of Iran's presidential elections died from beatings, Iranian media reported Monday in what appeared to be the first official confirmation of a detainee's death from mistreatment.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has closed the prison where the detainee died.

The death of Mohsen Rouhol-Amini was the result of "repeated blows and severe physical injuries" and other mistreatment at Tehran's Kahrizak prison, the semiofficial Mehr news agency reported, citing an informed source. Officials initially had said Rouhol-Amini had died from illness.

Kahrizak was ordered closed by Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in late July amid reports that the facility did not meet required standards.

Rouhol-Amini was one of two inmates who died at the prison after they were arrested for protesting the results of the disputed June 12 election, Iranian media reported nearly two weeks after Khamenei's order to shut down the prison. In the wake of the deaths, authorities fired and arrested Kahrizak's warden.

At the time, Gen. Esmaeel Ahmadi Moghadam, commander of Iran's security forces, in announcing the arrest of the warden, said no one died at Kahrizak from physical abuse and that the inmates died from illnesses.

"The coroner is investigating the deaths in order to determine the source of their illness and the virus that caused their deaths," he said.

As of Sunday, state-run outlets, including the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), still reported that Rouhol-Amini died of pre-existing conditions.

On Monday, the source with knowledge of the coroner's report told Mehr that pre-existing illnesses did not play a role in the death.

The coroner's findings, as reported by Mehr, offer credibility to reformists and human rights groups that have accused Iran's Islamic government of allowing the abuse, torture and rape of post-election detainees.

Government officials have tried to discredit the claims, while at the same time promising to investigate the allegations if they receive evidence. Khamenei himself met with Rouhol-Amini's father, Abdol-Hossein, on Sunday and vowed that "the system has no intention to forgive or be courteous to any wrongdoers," IRNA reported.

Abdol-Hossein Rouhol-Amini served as a campaign adviser to presidential candidate Mohsen Rezaei, a conservative. Despite challenges from his opponents, incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadined was declared the overwhelming winner of the race, sparking hundreds of thousands of Iranians to take to the streets for more than two weeks to protest the election results.

More than 1,000 people were arrested in the government crackdown that followed, and Iranian officials said at least 30 people were killed in post-election violence, though the opposition put the number at more than twice that figure.

More than 100 Iranians arrested in the crackdown are going through mass trials this month. Top military officials have called for faster prosecutions and demanded "swift retribution" for post-election detainees, Iranian media have reported.

Khamenei last week warned the judiciary should not use "rumors" as the basis for their prosecution, and should try them on strong evidence.
