(AGI) – Kiev, 3 Sept. – A new crisis is unfolding in the government of Ukraine. “A political and constitutional coup d’état has begun in Parliament” affirmed the Ukrainian president, Viktor Yushenko. This morning, the President accused Prime Minister Iulia Timoshenko of trying to reduce powers of the president in order to assign them to the Prime Minister’s office. Yushenko has threatened to use his powers “to dissolve Parliament and proceed to new elections” if a new coalition does not form within 30 days. The presidential party, ‘New Ukraine’, has in the meantime voted to leave the majority by a vote of 39 deputies out of 72. Relations between Yushenko and Timoshenk came under further tension by the war in Georgia when the president accused the premier of having too close relations with Moscow.
