In reality, the ousting of the syrian regime might have unforeseen consequences on the region (could be good/bad, short-term/long-term).

In priniciple, DOWN WITH ALL TYRANTS

As a Lebanese I am not comfortable with someone from my country openly calling for the overthrow of a foreign government. This has nothing to do with the Baathists and I am not neglecting their crimes in Lebanon but I am questioning whether or not this is the right thing to do. I consider the Baath party an equivalent to Zionism, no difference. However, at the very least we can’t forget about Walid Jumblatt’s history with the Syrians and suddenly he’s against them but this is about us as Lebanese, all of us: should we be okay with people calling for the overthrow of Syria’s government? Will your stance be helpful to Lebanon? Why or why not?

Your question is mined Haruun.

In the absolute sense, should the Syrian regime be overthrown? You don't need two people to tell you yes, especially if a democratic replacement is ready.

However, you are linking your question to whatever Jumblat might or might not be doing, so technically you are mining this question.

Please be clearer next time that you want to ask such a critical question.

Regards

I will de-mine it for you if Haruun doesn't mind.

Should we allow ourselves to get entangled in Junblat's and Hariri's zealous effort (whether successful or not and, in my opinion, not) to push for a regime change in Syria? And to make it even clearer, especially when we know that Hariri and Junblat would love to see their ex-partner and mentor criminal Khaddam replace the Assad clan?

And should people looking for a role at any price like Geagea or presidential aspirants like Harb, N. Lahoud and Neyla let themselves be dragged by Hariri and Junblat into such a misguided plan?

Default In Resume... - 2nd May 2006

Haruun,

I really liked this thread...and your avatar!...

Truth is, if there is an option that says: "Let the Syrians decide, and the Lebanese should care", then I would vote for just that.

Quite frankly, a regime change in Syria should be done by the Syrian people themself.

If they need outside help, they can request for one and altogether, they can plan the ousting of the current tyranny.

This is the first step towards democracy in Syria.

However, my question is: "What make us think that the next Syrian regime will be any better?"...

If anything, I am convinced that the next regime in Syria will be the worse ever in Arabo-Muslim history, and people will see this with their own eyes (I did a strong analysis over this subject).

First, the people who support the new rule in Syria are some of the world's worst criminals ever, much more awful then the little baby, Bashar Assad...

The worst of them all is Khaddam, who was the main brain behind Syrian crimes in Lebanon...why is the March 14 group cheering for him today?...

Is this for Lebanon? Or is it because they think Assad killed Hariri so Hariri matters more then Lebanon and it is assumed that Assad killed him?...

Did they forget that Hariri, like other Lebanese leaders, where charged responsibility to work for Lebanon?...

Did they forget that outside Hariri, all other suspected Syrian crimes in Lebanon where done by Khaddam?...

This would be the first argument.

Second, comes the fact that it will be openly backed by the Western Imperialist machine....what is happening in Iraq today is not giving us a good impression on what America is doing in the Middle East, so quite naturally, most people in this world are not feeling enthusiastic about an American plan for Syria...if anything, they are scared!...

Third, Hosni Mubarak is considered the worst dictator in the Arab World today, even before Saddam Hussein...and he is with the March 14 team for support of a regime change in Syria...if anything, he was the first to say that a "Sunni vs. Shia" tension is official...such dangerous words from a dangerous person is simply intolerable.

Fourth, even worse...Mubarak's biggest enemies, the Muslim Brotherhood, is said to have a plan for a change in Syria...double the wickedness...

Walla, all these signs are so negative, it makes Assad look like a saint!...

This is really bad...

My answer is simply: "No for foreign interference in Syria, not even a Lebanese one over there, and yes for 100% Syrian democracy via having a tyrant regime overthrown and led by a Syrian population".

Every action in Syria will affect Lebanon, especially the sectarian tension which is already high and based on the Sunni vs. Shia warfare...

The Christians will be the first to be affected by it because they wont have huge participation...making them the first victim....just like all innocent people in a state of war...such as children, women, the elders and non-participative men, they are the first to be affected by this tyrannical mess...

Take good care,

Ali Arz :LEBANON:

The majority of the Syrians are Sunnis, so how does this sound like, when the Shiites are complaining that they have no status in Lebanon and previous Iraq, and are calling themselves oppressed only when the leadership is non Shiite, but when the oppressed are oppressed by Shiites. The Sunnis do not fit under the oppressed majority criteria.

This is the double standard of the religious philosophy of oppressed and oppressor. The oppressed should be a Shiite to be rightly called oppressed, as long as Shiites oppress others then it is okay.

Yes we should support the overthrow of any minority leadership that rules a majority by oppressing them and denying them the right to participate in government. This is applicable to the minority that is in control in Syria by the Baathists regime of terror.

Surely the freedom of the Syrian people is not dependant on the Sunnis of Lebanon. I am sure that the Lebanese Sunnis view themselves as Lebanese and a democracy in Syria does not entail a pan-Arab state. These two are not related.

Exactly, just think about this verse and think if this is addressed to individuals or to sectarian groups. Then we could start a valuable conversation with one standard. This one that you just mentioned in the verse.
