Default Should the Syrian Regime be Overthrown? - 2nd May 2006

A simple question: who do you prefer as a Lebanese citizen to rule Syria, the Baath party or a democratic government with the possibility of the Muslim Brotherhood taking power?

Most recently, Walid Jumblatt hosted the Muslim Brotherhood in Mukhtara and is outspoken with regards to the Syrian regime, he is openly calling for the US to remove the regime Iraqi-style.

As a Lebanese I am not comfortable with someone from my country openly calling for the overthrow of a foreign government. This has nothing to do with the Baathists and I am not neglecting their crimes in Lebanon but I am questioning whether or not this is the right thing to do. I consider the Baath party an equivalent to Zionism, no difference. However, at the very least we can’t forget about Walid Jumblatt’s history with the Syrians and suddenly he’s against them but this is about us as Lebanese, all of us: should we be okay with people calling for the overthrow of Syria’s government? Will your stance be helpful to Lebanon? Why or why not?

i don't understand some... Lebanon's Lebanon, and Syria's Syria...
Syria was interfering in Lebanon's Politics, now, Syria's out... why interfering in Syria's Politics??... why supporting Khaddam?

questions with no answers...

If the Syrians dislike Bachar El Assad, i don't think there's any problem in any rebel/revolution or any similar thing... and don't think there's any call from a syrian in syria for help from UN to take off Bachar because he's a dictator

P.S: If "THE ASSADS" are dictators in SYRIA, they couldv'e lost everything a long time ago...

Some will say now, Bachar is a dictator, and he'll KILL 'EM ALL... The answer is: he can't kill the Syrian population.

About LEBANON and Syria's relation, it's all based on politicians (ours and theirs) and the way they deal with their country's needs...

Two beer or not two beer (Shakesbeer) ;)

The whole bringing the Alawite government down in Syria to bring up a sunni lead government is an Iraqi problem............

USA is trying to give sunnis a country instead of the one it took from them.... simple trade off.

I don't mind seeing the Alawite regime fall if it is done by an internal act.... not if the USA brought it down.

this is a attempt from walid beik to regain the same power he had during the baath regime, but with another branch, the sunni branch, the branch that is allied with the USA.

walid beik and his allies are now ruling lebanon in a dictator's way, they are the minority. in tht beginning they used hizbollah to gain the majority, but after backstabbing both hizbollah and FPM, they know they need the help of an external power to rule lebanon.

the Khaddam / muslim brotherhood alliannce, overthrowing the current allawite baath and forming a sunny dictatorship allied to america and allied to junblat and hariri is their only hope. This sunni regime will gain as they hope simpathy from both syrian and lebanese sunnis.

CONCLUSION : i am against any NON DEMOCRATIC change in syria, backed by lebanese and other external influences.

and i dont think U.S want to remove the regime the U.S want only to change in it lets not forget U.S want what is good for Israel

but as Lebanese i would like to see some changing in the area but the problem in the middle east things always change to the worst not to the better

I don't care who will rule Syria yodrabo
what i think is that we(as FPMers ma ba3ref el ba2weh) kicked syria out of Lebanon not coz they are baathist or coz they ruled by assads family we fought for our freedom. There is no difference if they were from Venus

What jumblat is doing is a disaster seeing it from 2 points of view
1- Supporting a group against an other is what Syrians did in Lebanon, and as we didn't accept it for ourselves why accept it on them let them choose whoever they want
2- if he goes on in his plan i'm seeing that syrian role will strike again in Lebanon, not like the past 30 years, but i think they will interfere in our internal affairs. they will have a big role again. And they will be supported by Jumblat coz he is their allies

I may be wrong but who knows

We used to protest firmly on syrian hegemony and we fought bravely against their dominance for long time.
We had been asking also, for an equal relation between 2 independants states and not between states and individuals.
How come and who gave the approval to WJ to overtake such behaviors against syrian regime? not forgetting that in the same time, we are begging them to sign our demarcation and to receive Mr siniora.
When WJ delt shamefully with them for 30 years, he asked nobody, and this time he will not ask anybody also. "Fate7 3ala 7ssebo mitil l 3adi"

I think such a change will have dangerous effect in Lebanon.
because the alternative wont be democratic. the idea of seeing Hariri's movment moving in syria scares me.
