Rectification: "Russian Intelligence Sees U.S. Military Buildup on Iran Border"
Michel Chossudovsky Global Research April 2, 2008

The internet has been quoting an article entitled "Russian Intelligence Sees U.S. Military Buildup on Iran Border" published by RIA Novosti allegedly on March 27, 2008.

The date of this article is mistaken. Information Clearing House posted it on March 29, 2008. The original date of publication by Ria Novosti is March 27, 2007.

In the last few days, this text posted on The Information Clearing House has been considered by several authors and analysts of the Middle East as a bona fide current news item. The article has been quoted profusely in a number of articles, several of which point to an imminent military build-up directed against Iran.

What the authors of these articles have failed to do is to crosscheck the source and date of this Ria Novosti article. Moreover, they have not verified the history of the US-NATO Israeli build-up including the deployment of naval forces in the Persian Gulf and the Eastern Mediterranean.

The article quotes Col-General Leonid Ivashov, vice president of the Russian Academy of Geopolitical Sciences, who stated in March 2007 that "the Pentagon is planning to deliver a massive air strike on Iran's military infrastructure in the near future."

The article also states that: "the USS John C. Stennis, with a crew of 3,200 and around 80 fixed-wing aircraft, including F/A-18 Hornet and Superhornet fighter-bombers, eight support ships and four nuclear submarines are heading for the Gulf, where a similar group led by the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower has been deployed since December 2006."

The fact of the matter is that in late March 2008, the USS John C. Stennis had returned to Naval Base Kitsap in Bremerton, Washington State, arriving on the morning of March 28, 2008, "after five days of sea trials following six months in dry dock." (Upgraded aircraft carrier returns to base in Bremerton after trials)

The Ria Novosti article was not published on March 27, 2008 but a year earlier on March 27, 2007.

It was posted on the Global Research website on March 28, 2007. It was one among several articles which we published on the US-NATO military build-up in the Persian Gulf and the Eastern Mediterranean.

The US-NATO-Israeli threat to conduct a war directed against Iran is nonetheless real.

An understanding of this threat cannot be based on an isolated and outdated news item. It requires a historical review and understanding of a complex process.

The military planning as well as the build-up directed against Iran has taken place over a period of more than four years.

In recent developments, which are of significance in assessing US sponsored war plans directed Iran, Israel has been hosting a NATO naval exercise, involving six NATO frigates, which arrived in Haifa on March 31st for a joint drill with Israeli Navy missile boats.

"During the visit, a demonstration of naval capabilities took place, as well as an exchange of information on a range of topics," the Israeli military said in a statement. Israel has been shoring up ties recently with NATO as part of preparations for any future showdown with Iran."

For further reference on the US and allied military build-up directed against Iran and Syria, see The Global Research Iran Dossier, Iran: The Next War?

RIA Novosti - Russia - Russian intelligence sees U.S. military ... (original March 27, 2007 article)

Global Research: Russian intelligence sees U.S. military buildup on Iran border (March 28, 2007)

Mistaken date on Information Clearing House: Russian intelligence sees U.S. military buildup on Iran border (March 29, 2008)
Source: Rectification: "Russian Intelligence Sees U.S. Military Buildup on Iran Border"

And on this website too. Although we have subsequently corrected the date we have to point out that when we posted this article we checked the date and it was March 27, 2008 not 2007. Obviously someone is trying to discredit reports on the current and very real build-up of U.S. forces that could be deployed against Iran soon

Lebanon, Hezbollah on full alert
Press TV - Lebanon, Hezbollah on full alert
Press TV Sat, 05 Apr 2008 18:05:35 Lebanon's army and resistance movement of Hezbollah are on high alert in southern Lebanon to be ready for any Israeli hostile moves.

The Lebanese army Commander Michel Suleiman put all military units in southern Lebanon on full alert, Lebanese daily as-Safir reported.

"Suleiman ordered the army to be ready to prevent any possible violation of the Lebanese coastal waters and targeting civilians by the Israeli army," the paper quoted informed sources speaking on condition of anonymity.

The country went on full alert on Saturday a day before the Israeli regime is to begin what it called large-scale military defense exercises featuring scenarios in which chemical and biological missiles may hit populated areas.

Hezbollah has also said the group will 'vigilantly follow' the Israeli military exercises.

WSWS : News & Analysis : Middle East : Iran
Stop the US war drive against Iran!
By the Editorial Board
14 February 2007
SOON TO BE UPDATED WITH A MORE RECENT ARTICLE
There is an unmistakable acceleration in the tempo of events. In the aftermath of the election, the Bush administration dismissed out of hand the recommendations of the Iraq Study Group to hold negotiations with Iran and Syria. Instead, in announcing his “surge” in Iraq on January 10, Bush accused Iran and Syria of arming and training anti-US insurgents in Iraq and declared that the American military would “seek out and destroy” such support
The military buildup in the Persian Gulf, meanwhile, is proceeding apace. By the end of February, an American armada of 50 warships will be stationed in the area, including two carrier strike groups for the first time since March 2003. There are reports that a third such battle group may be on the way. Backed by warplanes that have been positioned at a network of military bases throughout the region, the US military will have the capacity to conduct round-the-clock bombing using cruise missiles and hundreds of warplanes. Batteries of Patriot anti-missile systems are currently being installed in the Gulf states to defend vital US military assets and reassure nervous allies against potential Iranian reprisals.

Alongside these military preparations, Washington is engaged in intense diplomatic activity. Senior Bush officials have crisscrossed the Middle East in the past weeks seeking to consolidate an anti-Iranian alliance, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan. The closest American ally in the region, Israel, has already threatened Iran with “severe steps” if it fails to shut down its nuclear programs.
The trips of Vice President Dick Cheney, the prime mover in the Iraq invasion, take on a particular significance. His one-day visit last November to personally meet with the Saudi monarch has been followed by a steady increase in Saudi oil output and fall in world oil prices, which not only undermines the Iranian economy but provides a cushion against the economic shock of war. This month Cheney is to visit Australia and Japan to line up support from these close allies for US plans on Iran.

Every attempt is being made to provoke a war. “They intend to be as provocative as possible and make the Iranians do something [America] would be forced to retaliate for,” Hillary Mann, the Bush administration’s former National Security Council director for Iran and Persian Gulf Affairs, told Newsweek.
