Icon5 'Choice, freedom, identity': wearing X (Burqa and Hijab) - 26th June 2009

there is huge debate going on in the western countries and in the whole world if they should ban the Burqa and Hijab...

and at the same time we see in some countries they force Hijab or burqa in public!

now i do understand most of the western countries that they dont like burqa as it can be unsocial and its like isolating the women from everything and can create problems with passport and id cards and so on

now my self i see it is wrong to ban Hijab it wont be much different from forcing hijab law like in Saudi Arabia and Iran both laws are ridiculous

why should i not have the freedom of wearing what i want if i like yellow i will be wearing yellow dont force me to wear green!

now the point of this thread is how ridiculous some countries can behave for example when the burqa or Hijab law was banned in some countries we directly started to hear from some countries that how this is against freedom while in their countries they force everybody to wear a burqa or hijab! what the difference from banning it and from forcing it?

whats your opinion on this issue?

I am against this ban with one stipulation, face should remain open for practical purposes.

Freedom of choice!
A lady should have the choice to wear whatever she wants, be it a hijab or burqa or anything she sees fit.

I can't, for the life of me, understand why it is the business of anyone to approve of force or ban anything!

It should not be banned neither forced to wear.

However the type of burqa which covers completely or leaves the eyes open only, causes indeed not just security problems but attracts such a negative attention in the western countries.

When you see a procession of women in black burqa from head to toe, it appears very scary, they attract astonished looks, so not fitting in that environment (and spare me the myth of sexy ladies hiding under the burqa as I have seen only fat women hiding under them:D)

as for hijab, what is the real meaning of it? is it not to cover partly the beauty of the women thus not to make men attracted? the hijabs I see here mostly are attracting very much attention, they are very bright colours full of flitters and glitters so anything but showing modesty and reserve.

I don't expect you to know this, since you're not Muslim, but when a woman is wearing a hijab, it is an automatic hands-off, eyes-off signal. Who cares if she has designs on it? You can't make a hijab sexy no matter how hard you try and that's the point.

We've been having a problem in France - before the debate turned emotional - with the Identity Cards. Some women refuse to uncover their face when taking the picture for the I.D. and / or when there is an I.D. control.

I think that beside this problem, people must be free to wear whatever they want to wear.

hm in fact i saw some young girls in those fashionable hijabs they were quite pretty, as even if they wore the hijab their clothing was also rather fashionable and showing their body....so I just dont get whats the meaning of hijab?

I see that burqa is hiding, but these type of colourful hijabs dont...and those girls who wear it has the least intention to appear modest ( i guess it is just that dad told them to cover their head with something)

Some (stupid) girls will dress up in tight clothing despite wearing a hijab, but the vast majority do not. The hijab is meant to keep the eyes of men off of women, not necessarily for modesty amongst other women. When Muslim women sit together or with their families, they tend to take their hijab off and put it back on only when men walk in.

Take it from a guy: the hijab is very unsexy and inhibits the imagination.

In any case, I see the hijab as a stone-age device. It's time people grew out of it. None of my female family members, save for my grandmother (go figure) have ever even worn a hijab in public anyway.

EDIT: I should mention that my dislike for the hijab extends from the fact that I am against sexual repression, not because I seek to make the White Man comfortable.
