Assad confesses to secret negotiations with Israel
Thursday, 24 April, 2008 @ 3:31 PM
Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad said that Turkish Prime Minister Rajab Tayyeb Ardugan informed him of Israel's readiness to withdraw from the Golan Heights, and admitted that he has been negotiating with Israel for two years.
The Syrian leader disclosed that Israel and Syria were exchanging messages since the end of the 2006 Lebanon War, adding that the flow of messages had intensified since Turkey became involved about a year ago, especially since April 2007. "The mediation between Damascus and Tel Aviv thoroughly increased since the end of the war in Lebanon and Hizbullah's victory," Assad said. "However, Turkey entering the picture in April of last year has precipitated the disclosure of new positive details as Olmert told the Turkish prime minister that he was willing to retreat from the Golan," Assad said.
"There won't be any secret negotiations with Israel, only public talks. Negotiations will not be direct, but through Turkish mediation," Assad told the Kuwaiti daily Al-Watan.
Assad noted that Turkey's involvement in this matter since 2007 has led to some success.
"We need now to find a common platform through the Turkish mediator. We will discuss first the matter of regaining the land to examine Israel's credibility, as we have to be careful while discussing this matter. Maybe with the next US administration, we can talk about direct negotiations," Assad said.
He added that direct negotiations require a sponsor. "This sponsor can only be the US, but unfortunately, it does not have any vision on the peace process," Assad said.

Hmmmm...
(mainly to the OP remark - Shuyu3i) Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems you're mad because Assad has been negotiating for peace, even if mildly, in the past 2 years, yet he gives weapons and money to the LRM.
In other words, he's been seeking ways for peace, while still helping resistance forces, so you're mad at him. Correct?
(assuming I'm correct...)
So what do you expect of him? To never seek peace?
If the LRM had known he'd be seeking peace, or in other words, reaching his goals with as little conflict as possible, what difference would it make?
Would it be better for them if he had not given money and weapons?
Had they changed their views just because Assad hadn't been solely devoted for war and vengeance?
Are you mad at him because he's been seeking peace, because it might really be a viable option, yet you're left behind because you fail to realize it? | | | | | Orange Room Supporter

What's wrong in trying to reach some settlement with his ennemies?
And why should we mingle in others' internal affairs?Syria is free to do whatever suits its interests,as long as it doesn't harm mine.In this case,I would even be glad to help it if i could. Why shouldn't I?
And as long as Syria is helping us in the resistance effort,i really don't see why i should care for anything it does with Israel.
Syria is even free to stop helping us in the resistance effort. So what?
As long as it does not engage itself in policies and activities directed against our interests...Why should i care?
You don't want Syria to mingle in our internal affairs...How about us doing the same?...Either we do what we preach,or we stop preaching!...Walla 3ajab! | | | | | Orange Room Supporter

Is Turkey impartial enough to act as a mediator? What is their interest, aside polishing themselves in the eye of EU? Quote:

I wasn't asking as if Hezbollah was the Lebanese government, however the willof Hezbollah to settle with Israel would be a major drive towards an overall Lebanese diplomacy, don't you think? | | | | | | |
