Sectarianism and Identity in Lebanon...Please Explain!

1) Tradition and ignorance: we do it, becoz that's the way things are and that's the way we were raised to be (first theory)
2) Personal interests: It doesn't matter what religion or sect you shift to, as long as it protects your interests (i.e: the christians converting to muslims under the ottomans, to avoid taxes!!) and it allows you to live the way that suits you...

Yes it is a must in Islam. However many don't abide by that law, so in the end it's a personal choice of whether one is to stick to his religion or do whatever he desires.
