Default Partial Solar Eclipse in Lebanon today - 1st August 2008

Today, a total eclipse of the sun will be visible from northern Canada, Groenland, middle of Russia, eastern Kazakhstan, western Mongolia, China and India.

A partial eclipse will be seen from eastern North America, and most of Europe and Asia.
In Lebanon, it can be observed from 1.17 pm until 2.17 pm local time.

For our members and guests who may be living in the path of the total eclipse, here is the trajectory it will take according to wikipedia.org:

Canada
The eclipse begins in far northern Canada, at about 09:24 UT; the zone of totality is 206km wide, and the eclipse will last for 1 minute 30 seconds. The track then heads north-east, crossing northern Greenland at about 09:30, and passes near the pole before dipping down into Russia.

Russia
The eclipse reaches the Russian mainland at 10:10 UT, with a path 232km wide, and a duration of 2 minutes 26 seconds. Greatest eclipse occurs shortly after, at 10:21 UT, when the path will be 236km wide, and the duration up to 2 minutes 27 seconds.

China
The path then moves south-east, crossing into Mongolia and just clipping Kazakhstan at around 10:58 UT. The path here is 252km wide, but the duration is down to 2 minutes 10 seconds. The path then runs down the China-Mongolia border, ending in China at 11:18 UT, with an eclipse lasting 1 minute 27 seconds at sunset.

India
In India, the visual treat will start at 4:03 pm in Delhi and last for about two hours with maximum impact at 5:02 pm. In rest of the country, the partial eclipse will be visible a few minutes later.

N.B: Please be advised that looking directly to the sun can cause damage to the eye. There are glasses with specifically designed filters used for viewing the sun directly.
Remember that normal sunglasses do NOT protect your eyes from harmful wavelengths.

People will now cover windows and chimneys with aluminum foil and also put wet towels at the base of the doors to avoid any "radiation".

Couldn't see anything, was cloudy

Either way, on the following eclipses, if you can't find special sunglasses, here are some homemade or accessible tools you can use instead:

1- Welding Mask, I used it at university when I was at the workshop and the eclipse started. This one is a beauty, could be even better than commercial lenses.

2- Take a flat piece glass, light a candle, and pass the glass on top of the candle. Let the carbon stick on the glass. Be careful, do at several repetitions, don't let the glass heat, so pass it 1 second, and let it rest 10 seconds, and repeat.

Either way, don't look for longer than 15 seconds at a time, look 10 seconds with the tool, and let your eyes rest for a minute or so, then you can repeat.
