Découverte majeure réalisée à Montréal

Des chercheurs de l'Université de Montréal ont annoncé, lundi, avoir effectué une percée majeure dans la lutte contre le sida.

L'équipe du professeur Rafick-Pierre Sékaly a identifié une protéine, la PD-1, qui, une fois stimulée, permettrait de restaurer la fonction des cellules T, responsables d'éliminer des cellules infectées et devenues dysfonctionnelles par le virus du VIH.

Ces travaux ont été reproduits par des équipes de chercheurs américains et publiés dans la prestigieuse revue Nature Medecine.

Le coprésident du dernier congrès mondial sur le sida tenu la semaine dernière à Toronto, le Dr Mark Wainberg, a qualifié cette découverte de « pas de géant dans la lutte contre le sida ».

Cette percée pourrait en effet ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives dans le développement de médicaments visant à contrôler l'infection par le VIH. Des essais cliniques pourraient débuter dès l'année prochaine.

Actuellement, environ 20 % des personnes séropositives développent une multirésistance qui finit par empêcher les médicaments rétroviraux d'être efficaces.

Highly regarded internationally, Dr. Sékaly is a full professor of medicine, microbiology and immunology at the Université de Montréal and director of its laboratory of immunology. He is also the founder and Chair of the National Centre of Excellence CANVAC on vaccines and immunomodulators for cancer and chronic viral diseases.

HIV attacks the body s immune system, most people who die when they have aids don t die of aids itself , they get some other illiness and their body can t fight it. A simple cold can be deadly for people with aids.
The team of prof Sekaly discovered that there is a protein in the body if stimulated properly ( i don t know how that is done) can help restore the cells of the immune system that were infected with aids.
