Default Learning Aramaic - 4th February 2007

I would like to know more about the Aramaic language in Lebanon. Is it still spoken? And if yes, in which regions? Are they teaching it in Lebanon?

And anyway, I am interested in generally where can somebody learn Aramaic? Especially in Europe?

Thanks

Syria, there are villages that speak it all. :), they have monastries and everything extending from 2000 years. Maybe in a couple of years ill visit syria on a short pilgrimage. Since the occupation is over, boycotting Syria isn't neccessary anymore and hey we dont need visas :D, hehehe

Yeah I heard about the syrian villages, just I thought maybe its used in Lebanon as well, aside from church.
You think mainly the priests are learning it in Lebanon?
And what about elsewhere in the world?

Only some scholars know it, whether they are lithurgy scholars, archeologists, linguists, or someone academically related.

Aramaic is close to Arabic and Hebrew, they all have the same root.

As CPL mentioned, only some scholars speak it.. The only way to learn it is through them.

mmm.. take a look at this:

La Bakhet ya ttoflea zorra
Inayet neplit
Ideotea mhadehedelo
Inayet neplit

I would be glad if you provide a translation. :)

So it seems I will be able to learn from the priests mainly, maybe I shall go to a monastery.
