In this thread we will talk about the history of lebanon and how everything related to this country began.
I will begin by posting information about the
Lebanese Flag The Lebanese flag: Through the centuries
The Lebanese Flag and Its Evolution Throughout History (Adapted from Lebanese historian Joseph Nehme's book)
Lebanon has had several flags and banners, around which the Lebanese citizens had gathered through times of peace and war. The Lebanese flag has evolved according to the following historical steps:
1- Phoenician Flag
This flag was blue, symbolizing the sea, yet the red color was later added to it when the purple color was discovered.
2- Tanukh Flag ~200 - ~400
Tannoukhian Flag: Consisted of 5 colors divided vertically in equal bands of white, blue, yellow, red and green."
Usually spelt Tanukh, Tanookh, Tanuq or Tanooq (also Thanouite) – a pre-Islamic Arab tribe from the 2nd-4th centuries AD which migrated from Yemen to Iraq and Syria and converted to Christianity.
3- Umayyad Caliphate 660-750 & Abbasid Caliphate 750-1258
Photos from that time show a green flag, edged all around with white (though this may simply be a fringe, the sort of wide fringe often seen on Saudi flags), with a large white circle in the center, upon which is a red crescent, points up, and within the crescent the name of the body in calligraphic Arabic.
4- Kingdom of Jerusalem 1099-1291 5- Prince Ibrahim-Era Rebels
It became a white cloth with a red carnation at the bottom right corner
6- Merdai Flag (Kaissites - Yemenites)
It consisted of a cross and a sword, both white, on a red cloth.
red flag with white cross and sword. Division in two branches: Kaysites and Yemenites (like the Guelphs and Ghibellines, and of course the Yemenites were not from Yemen) with red flags and white flags.
7- Lamaïte Flag
It consisted of a white cloth with a drawing of a Lion." It has, furthermore, a "rope of potence" meaning courage
8- Abu Kanad Flag
Consisted of two vertical and equal bands, one yellow and one blue.
9- Harfush emirs: green flag
• Shii emir: green flag
• In 1685 the Lebanese (?) flag was published in Florence: red, with a cedar over a bull.
• Arsilanians: green with white flower in center.
• Imadies: vertical dark blue and green
• Nakadites: plain red
10- Jumblatian Flag
It consisted of a red flag with a green frame; a sword and a dark green hand in the middle
The sword on the Djumblatide flag must be also green. The hand is the Druze symbol of the five frontiers, and the sword is the symbol of the right.
11- Maanid Flag, Late 17th Century
Originally a religious sect of Islam, the Druze were assigned most of Lebanon by the Atabeg of Damas[cus] in 1119. The rulers belonged to the Maanid dynasty replaced in 1697 by the related Sunni Chehab Emirs who lost their sovereign power in 1842.
12- Mamluk Sultanate 1282-1516 (Historical Flags, Lebanon) - مماليك
"It consisted of a cloth embroidered with golden threads."
13- Shihab Flag ca. 1697-1842
Shehabian Flag: Consisted of a blue cloth with a white crescent.
The Chehabites flag is correct (but should be square) meaning the love to the peace
14- Deir el Qamar, 1830 (Historical Flags, Lebanon) - دير القمر
Deir el Kamar in 1830 used red flag with superimposed green cross.
According to the municipal website, the town of Deir el Qamar was a capital of the Maanid and early Chehab emirs.
The municipal CoA contains the same naturalistically-rendered carnation found on the Rebels' and Kaïssites' flags, also reported to have been on the flag of Maanid Emirate, and a lion similar to that on the Lamaïte flag.
15- Ottoman Empire Flag -1918
Consisted of a red cloth with a white crescent and white star in the center, and remained as such until their departure in 1918.
16- Cedar Flag 1918
Lebanese Cedar: Following the fall of the Ottoman Empire, it consisted of a white cloth with a green cedar in the center." The tree in the original image shows some minor differences with the cedar in the French mandate flag, but the latter appears to be much more precise.
After XVII century the flag (white) with cedar was used by the Maronite Christians. But the first attested use is dated only to October 1848.
17- French Mandate July-August 1920
The Allied Supreme Council gave the mandate of nowadays Syria and Lebanon to France on 25th April 1920, confirmed 23rd July 1922. General Gouraud occupied Damascus, Faysal was defeated in Maisselum 24th July 1920, dethroned and forced into exile in Iraq.
18- French Mandate of Greater Lebanon 1920-1943
"Lebanese flag during the French Mandate: It was similar to the Blue, White and Red French Flag with a green Cedar in the middle, and was designed by the president of the Lebanese Nahda (renaissance) Movement, the late Naoum Mukarzel."

The Lebanese Flag consists of three horizontal bands, red, white, and red, with a green cedar in the center, i.e. the white band that amounts to the size of both red bands put together. The tip and root of the green Cedar both stretch towards the edge of the red areas. The red bands symbolize the pure blood, shed in the aim of liberation. The white band symbolizes peace. As for the green cedar, it symbolizes immortality. The Lebanese flag was raised in Bashamoun on the 21st of November 1943 at 11:20 pm. It is believed that this same flag is now kept in the National Museum, although it may have been transported to the Governmental Palace in Bteddine.
