Default Baalback - 10th July 2007

Baalbeck, Lebanon's greatest Roman treasure, can be counted among the wonders of the ancient world. The largest and most noble Roman temples ever built, they are also among the best preserved.
Towering high above the Beqaa plain, their monumental proportions proclaimed the power and wealth of Imperial Rome. The gods worshipped here, the Triad of Jupiter, Venus and Mercury, were grafted onto the indigenous deities of Hadad, Atargatis and a young male god of fertility. Local influences are also seen in the planning and layout of the temples, which vary from the classic Roman design.

Over the centuries Baalbeck's monuments suffered from theft, war and earthquakes, as well as from numerous medieval additions.
Fortunately, the modern visitor can see the site in something close to its original form thanks to work in the past hundred years by German, French and Lebanese archaeologists.
Baalbeck is located on two main historic trade routes, one between the Mediterranean coast and the Syrian interior and the other between northern Syria and northern Palestine.
Today the city, 85 kilometers from Beirut, is an important administrative and economic center in
the northern Beqaa valley.

It's a Lebanese treasure and wonder that we haven't known how to preserve. I have been there countless times and it is always more breathtaking each time.

It is very sad that an English litterature writer visited Baalbeck in the 18th century and claimed that if they had the Baalbeck ruins in England, all the English people would live a tax free life, while we take it for granted.

I personally believe the temples to be one of the wonders of the world.

What a sin!! How Roman is Baalbeck!! maybe u forgot that that no where else in the roman empire do we see such glory and majesty!!! The nature of the works and even the calculations done in building it are still miraculous!! Maybe telling us something about the relationship our engineers had with Egypt. Please Baalbeck can't be counted among the wonders of the world !! It is!! The world will recognize it when it becomes impartial and searching for real divine beauty!!

if you are taking someone who has never been to Baalbak, make sure you trick them and bring them to the first jupiters gate which is quite small that some guy has crafted on his land hehe they are going to be initially disappointed but it will make them appreciate the spectacular site of the real Baalbak when they see it a short drive later.

Also go to Chateau Ksara, they have a free tour where you can sample wines!

I Love Baalbeck.... I visited it in 2006 few days before the July war.... I think there's more to Baalbeck than just the temples though.... there's the famous sfee7a baalbeckiyeh... the narrow streets... uhh... the stores on the streets, the people... the charisma of the city
