Default Ads in Lebanon: Where did all the creativity go?? - 20th July 2005

Please Note that the purpose of this thread is NOT to NAME the brands in certain ads.

I have no doubt that there are some good ads in Lebanon but in the previous years the majority of the lebanese-made ads were good enough to compete and win international awards...

Nowadays, it is a disaster whether on Billboards, Radio or TV... just an aggression to the eyes and minds!

The Billboards (an urgent regulation is needed because they are literally everywhere) are just dull and we get lost mainly between Cigarettes Ads ( when will we follow the western countries and forbid such ads) and "singers" ads... Frankly I can't say which are worse...

As for the radio and TV ads, the choices are between meaningless/even idiotic ads Or sexist ones or both combined!!

I had the honor to listen to a man granting his "hayeteh" i.e. wife the right to buy whatever she wants blablabla because he got a loan from a bank!
Or even a woman nagging her man because she wants to buy a something.
Or a woman interrogating her husband because he knows that a restaurant in kaslik is cheap "yi with whom did you goooo"
Or even an ad with a sweet little boy writting a letter to his mum : nice comments until he ends it with a thank you dear mum for the charcuterie sandwich every day!!!

Unfortunately the list is long... It seems to me that we have entered the dark ages in Lebanon where creativity and achievements are just missing in almost every possible field...

I agree a lot of this publicity is just audiovisual pollution. It's unfortunate that we have so many more "important" problems that issues like this one are completely sidelined.

You should also add the video clips to the list. Simply degrading.

I see the whole concept of TV advertisement insulting to people's intelligence, regardless of whether the ad is interesting or not. For example, the Crush advertisement is awesome, whenever it's on .. i find myself singing " this is the story of my brother and iiii .. la la la la la laaaa la la la la la laaaa la la la la la laaaaaaa la la la la la laaaaaa (8) " , but that didn't modify my economic behaviour : i'm still a mirinda loyalist. The cool dudes and the catchy song did not convince me to rush into the nearest store and buy a Crush can.

As for the thread's subject - which is sucky ads - let's take a random example, i was watching few minutes ago an ad in which a little kid is thanking his mom for a ham sandwich. What strook me in this ad is the retardness and illiteracy of this kid. I mean " merci mama la2annik 7elwé w bta3mlilé cadoyét w sandwich La Piara". Is bastardizing the Arabic language supposed to reflect the kid's innocence or something ? By the age of 4, most kids i've seen speak two languages fluently. KIDS ARE NOT STUPID. THEY SPEAK BETTER THAN YOU DO, AD. DEPARTMENT A--HOLES!!!!! Dakota Fanning is younger than your little snob, more convincing, and her vocabulary is much more diverse ! Another point, if the kid is supposedly thanking his mom, let it be for something which makes sense : an Xbox, some porn movie, a Disneyland ticket, a Bayern Munich shirt, an Iron Maiden CD ... but for god's sake ... a sandwich ?

i agree with some what u told

but in lebanon the ads it's really advance from the other countries especially arabic ones, and the ads became to lebanon the cinema ( sure + the videao clip )
we have g8 directors we have g8 immagination we can do what ever we want

if u look at 90% of the arabic media u can find that the production is lebanese or the director or the Co

yes there is some bad Ads,but also there is a good add like every think in life Ex ( we have fairuz and we have haifa ;o) )

Indeed. Nowadays it is all about politics or should I say talking about politicians... Try to open a debate on these ads, or ecology, women's rights, insecticide LOL or astronomy and see the reaction...
naturally not everyone in lebanon is that short-sighted nor on monotask mode mais bon...

I get a preview from time to time while switching channels... It seems directors discovered a new furniture item essential for every clip: the bed... ya3neh if that is creativity!!

LOL actually we are talking about hte same ad, but hmm i was more politically correct
However, and this is another prob in lebanon some kids do talk like that (since they spend all the time with the "maid") with the benediction of their parents...

As for the ad in question, completely ridiculous.. as if the mother's sole role is to make sandwitchs.... the father making a sandwich? NoooOo fathers drink beer.. watch TV...

au pays des aveugles les bornes sont rois...
We used to produce outstanding ads and participate in International contest... Most of the current ads would not even pass the 1st selection to get into the nominees list!

Yes we used to have imagination and creativity nowadays we barely see that.

Fairuz is not the result of the past 5-8 years... A retrospective analysis on the past 5 years will not reveal a single new "artist" digne de ce nom!

It hurts to admit it and reach such conclusions. it even bugs me because instead of maintaining our Good level we just stood so low out of negligance or ignorance? I can't really say. All I know is that we should get back to our competitive performances and get out of these dark ages!

I totally agree, specially about the ads on the radio; It's really silly, unimaginative and ridiculous:
  • "every morning, the loaf of bread will dance oriental, every morning the loaf of bread will dance occidental"
  • sometimes, where it doesn't fit, they excessively use laser sounds...
  • Most of the conversations in those ads are non coherent and usually silly.
I wonder what if a tourist or an immigrant listen to them, what will he think about the Lebanese...

some universities are now graduating excellent students! but too bads, no body wants to pay them what they deserve! and those students are very creative! they start a campain and find out that they stand a chance and just leave the country!
the prob is that we have a monopole like in every sector in this country! and they take the ads and u see the result!
still i just love the ads of the banks nowadays, more creative with some great music!

phoenix resurection
