Anyone has any pictures or detailed resources about the 1956 earthquake which hit lebanon?

Or about previous lebanese earthquakes?

All i could find on net was very shallow info. Thanks

Arrow 25th January 2008

I recall Spring 1997, when an earthquake shook Lebanon early morning, some specialists hosted by Maguy Farah on MTV said that it was a sequel of the one in 1956.

I also know that both have almost the same magnitude, but I wonder why the one of 1956 caused more damages and casualties than he one of 1997.

They mentioned that earthquakes of this magnitude occur periodically every 40-41 years.

You guys are useless :P

I finished the thingie, but couldnt find any pictures online.

Anyway, for any1 interested, the 1956 and march 1997 that cedar mentioned were both on the Roum fault, which branches off the dead sea rift, same as Tayyouneh fault and Serghaya fault.

The 56 one is actually not considered one of the very big ones, the last big one was in 1759 on serghaya, and its recurrence is about 250 years.

Plus the earthquake from 551, that destroyed most cities, is believed to have been caused by a fault 5 miles off our coast, and its recurrence is 1500 years.

So 1759+250 = 2009. 551+1500=2051.

We could have a big one any day now :D

a lot of geologist mentioned the issue, national geographic talked abt the tsunami that occurs each 1500 in the region,,, nshalla this wont happen... but this is why we have people like michel hayek going "nostradamusing" on tvs that the water will cover main regions and stuff!

Default Update! - 15th February 2008

Even now the Relation of the 1759 and 551 are of a higher Chance, 2day at 12:36PM there was a 4.2 Earthquake that struck all of Lebanon(my Building was Rockin and Rollin O_O), More Earthquakes with lower Tremors are Expected to hit throwout 15days, but still no1 can Predict Exactly when the "BIG ONE" is gonna happen.
