Is it time to Introduce Tennis Challenge System In Football?

I am sure I am not the first to propose this solution, but how about football introduces a tennis-style challenge system? Each team are allowed to challenge three refereeing calls per game. If they make an incorrect dispute, they lose a challenge, but if they are correct, their number of challenges remain as they are.

This system has been a huge success since it was introduced to tennis, and it has had no real adverse effect on slowing down the game. To ensure this is not the case in football, perhaps a maximum of two challenges would be sensible.

When the challenge is made, the referee or fourth official is notified, a call is made to a fifth official, who has a television in front of him, the correct decision is taken, and 15 seconds later the game resumes again.

So what calls would coaches or captains be allowed to challenge? This is where things get tricky, and it is perhaps where you readers can offer your suggestions.

I would propose that you can only challenge a referee for what he awarded, rather than what he didn�t award. For example a team can argue AGAINST a penalty, an offside or over-the-line goal, or a red card, but they cannot demand that the referee award a penalty, or send a player off.

Only the big decisions are allowed to be challenged. These would include penalties, offsides and infringements that led to goals (like Henry's), and over-the-line goals, but not free kicks, corners, throw-ins, and other less major infringements.

Much more analysis is required than what I have provided here, but the original, simple idea, from which to build upon, is there, and that is that a tennis-style challenging system may actually benefit football.

It would partly put to an end the accusations that the most powerful men (like those in FIFA) are running the game, while it would also stop the complaints that the smaller teams (like Ireland) are the ones who are always penalised.

Most importantly, the formula that each team are only allowed two or three challenges a match would not destroy the flow or the traditions of the game, aspects which simply must be retained to keep the sport beautiful.

What is clear is it is unfair that a team like Ireland, who have sweated their guts out for 18 months and played the perfect 210 minutes against France, deserving to go through, are denied a spot at the World Cup in such unjust circumstances. And it is not the first time that Giovanni Trapattoni has been 'cheated' out of the World Cup...

العالم لكرة القدم للمرة الاولى في تاريخه بسقوطه مرة ثانية في الرحلة الاخيرة من
التصفيات اثر خسارته امام نظيره النيوزيلندي صفر-1 في اياب ملحق آسيا-اوقيانيا
اليوم السبت في ويلينغتون امام نحو 35 الف متفرج مانحا صاحب الارض بطاقته الى
مونديال جنوب افريقيا 2010.
وسجل روري فالون هدف الفوز في الدقيقة 45.
وكان المنتخبان تعادلا سلبا في مباراة الذهاب في العاشر من الشهر الماضي في
المنامة.
تكرر السيناريو مع منتخب البحرين الذي سقط ايضا في الملحق الاخير في التصفيات
الماضية المؤهلة الى مونديال المانيا 2006, فبعد ان تخطى اوزبكستان في الملحق
الاسيوي التقى مع ترينيداد وتوباغو في ملحق اسيا-الكونكاكاف, فعاد من ترينيداد
بتعادل لكن ايجابي 1-1 قبل ان يخسر على ارضه وبين جمهوره صفر-1 ويفقد فرصة التأهل.
ونجح منتخب نيوزيلندا في المقابل في التأهل الى النهائيات للمرة الثانية في
تاريخه بعد عام 1982 في اسبانيا, علما بأنه مدربه ريكي هربرت كان احد نجوم
المنتخب قبل 27 عاما.
ومع فشل منتخب البحرين في التأهل, ستغيب منتخبات عرب اسيا الغائب الابرز عن
مونديال 2010, وهي التي واظبت على الحضور في كأس العالم منذ 1982 عبر الكويت, ثم
العراق في 1986 والامارات في 1990 والسعودية اعوام 1994 و1998 و2002 و2006.
وتقتصر الحصة الاسيوية في المونديال المقبل على اربعة منتخبات هي استراليا
واليابان وكوريا الجنوبية وكوريا الشمالية.
وشاركت استراليا في مونديال المانيا ممثلة لاوقيانيا بدأت بعده خوض غمار
المنافسات والتصفيات في القارة الاسيوية.
بدأ المنتخب البحريني مهاجما وحصل على ركلتين ركنيتين في الدقائق الثلاث
الاولى, في حين بدا تراجع اصحاب الارض الى الدفاع عن منطقتهم في مستوى مشابه لما
قدموه في مباراة الذهاب في المنامة.
اولى المحاولات البحرينية على مرمى الحارس النيوزيلندي مارك باستون كانت من
كرة للمخضرم سلمان عيسى في الشباك الجانبي من الجهة اليمنى في الدقيقة الرابعة,
رد عليه بن سيغموند بمتابعة رأسية في الشباك العلوي )8(.
كانت المهمة واضحة للمنتخبين بعد حماسة الدقائق الاولى, اذ ان حسن التمركز
والانضباط الدفاعي كانا ميزة الطرفين اللذين يعرف كل منهما الاخر جيدا, فغلب
الاداء التكتيكي على تحركاتهما وكأن كل لاعب يعرف مهمته تماما في حالتي الدفاع او
الهجوم.
اندفع النيوزيلنديون الى الهجوم معتمدين على الاختراق عبر الاطراف وتمرير
الكرات العالية, وابعدت العارضة البحرينية كرة هدف لهم اثر كرة قوية سددها كريس
كيلن من خارج المنطقة )19( في اخطر محاولة منذ بداية المباراة.
تحكم اصحاب الارض بالمجريات نحو ربع ساعة لكن التركيز البحريني كان عاليا وحال
دون تهديد فعلي لمرمى محمد السيد جعفر باستثناء المحاولات من خارج المنطقة, ولم
يغفل البحرينيون الناحية الهجومية ايضا خصوصا عبر جيسي جون الذي سدد كرة قوية كان
لها الحارس باستون بالمرصاد )32(.
كانت التمريرات العرضية والمتابعات الرأسية لنيوزيلندا خطيرة من حين الى آخر,
وكادت الدقيقة 41 تحمل هدفا اثر كرة من الجهة اليسرى تابعها كريس كيلن برأسه من
دون مضايقة لكن محمد السيد جعفر كان في المكان المناسب لابعاد الخطر.
وخطف منتخب نيوزيلندا هدفا ثمينا في الثواني الاخيرة من الشوط الاول عندما
تطاول لكرة من ركلة ركنية من الجهة اليمنى واودعها برأسه في الشباك لم يتمكن
الحارس البحريني من ابعادها هذه المرة.
نزل المنتخب البحريني مهاجما في الشوط الثاني لانه كان مطالبا بالتسجيل قبل
فوات الان وسنحت له فرصة ذهبية لادراك التعادل, وهي نتيجة تؤهله الى النهائيات,
حين حصل على ركلة جزاء فشل سيد محمد عدنان في ترجمتها الى هدف.
ففي الدقيقة 51, مرر عبدالله فتاي كرة الى عبدالله عمر في الجهة اليمنى من
داخل المنطقة فتعرض الى العرقلة ليحتسب حكم المباراة الاوروغوياني خورخي لويس
ريوندي ركلة جزاء انبرى لها سيد محمد عدنان ووضع الكرة سهلة وقريبة من الحارس
باستون الذي سيطر عليها وابقى على تقدم منتخبه.
تواصل الحصار البحريني للمنطقة النيوزيلندية ما دفع بالمدرب ريكي هربرت الى
التنبه للامر فاشرك اندرو بارون بدلا عن مايكل ماكغينشي واوكل اليه مهمات دفاعية
املا في الحفاظ على التقدم حتى النهاية.
زج مدرب منتخب البحرين التشيكي ميلان ماتشالا بالمهاجم اسماعيل عبد اللطيف
مكان المدافع فوزي عايش في محاولة لتكثيف الناحية الهجومية املا في خطف هدف
التأهل.
ومع اقتراب المباراة من دقائقها العشر الاخيرة من دون اي تغيير في نتيجتها,
دفع ماتشالا ايضا بمحمود عبد الرحمن بدلا من سيد محمود جلال, مستفيدا من معظم
اوراقه الهجومية في ظل غياب علاء حبيل وحسين علي بسبب الاصابة.
ترك انطلاق البحرينيين الى الهجوم مساحات واسعة كاد منتخب نيوزيلندا يستفيد
منها في الهجمات المرتدة, ففي خضم الاندفاع البحريني للتسجيل, كانت انطلاقة مرتدة
لنيوزيلندا تثمر هدفا ثانيا حين وصلت الكرة الى روري فالون الذي سددها قوية من
مسافة قريبة فوق المرمى )81(.
التبديل البحريني الثالث كان بدخول احمد طالب مكان محمد حبيل في الدقائق الخمس
الاخيرة لكنه لم يحمل جديدا حتى صافرة النهاية.

Germany and Hannover 96 goalkeeper Robert Enke has died after being hit by a train in an apparent suicide on Tuesday, police have confirmed.

Enke, 32, was fatally injured at a level crossing north west of Hanover.

The German football federation (DFB) said in a statement: "The German team has learned of the death of Robert Enke with great shock."

Germany team manager Oliver Bierhoff added: "We are in a state of shock. It is beyond words."

Enke's daughter Lara died in 2006 of a rare heart condition when she was just two. He leaves behind his wife, Teresa, and an eight-month-old daughter the couple had adopted in May.

German police released a statement saying: "The victim is apparently national team goalkeeper Robert Enke from Hannover 96. The first police indications are that it was a suicide."

Enke was struck by a regional train travelling between Norddeich and Hannover at a railway crossing in Neustadt am Rubenberge and died at the scene. Some reports gave the time of his death as "shortly before" 6pm local time (1700 GMT).

He played eight times for Germany and also for clubs Carl Zeiss Jena, Borussia Monchengladbach, Benfica, Barcelona, Fenerbahce and Tenerife, before returning to the Bundesliga with Hannover in 2004.

Enke made his international debut aged 29 and became Germany's number one keeper after Jens Lehmann retired from internationals at the end of Euro 2008.

He had missed Germany's last four matches with a virus but returned for his club at the weekend.

Germany coach Joachim Low had indicated that Enke was in pole position for the number one jersey at next year's World Cup finals in South Africa.

Dr Theo Zwanziger, president of the DFB, said that the football community in Germany "are deeply distressed and in mourning", adding: "All our sympathy goes to the wife of Robert Enke and his family."

The Germany squad is currently in Bonn ahead of a friendly against Chile on Saturday, but Enke had not been called up, having only just returned to action for his club.

Hundreds of fans flocked to Hanover's Niedersachsen Stadion on Tuesday night to lay flowers and light candles for the captain of their club.

A news conference has been scheduled for 1230 GMT on Wednesday.

Charr will hope to celebrate his 25 birthday which also happens to be on Saturday with a win which will likely be considered his best to date. He holds a win over Gbenga Okoukan who was unbeaten until Charr stopped him in the seventh. Since then Okoukan has rebounded to beat Lamon Brewster which makes Charr�s victory all the more impressive. Charr was born in Lebanon but moved to Germany when he was 5. Now fighting out of his adopted homeland he homes to create mayhem in the Heavyweight division. With the current state of things he�s a welcome addition.

Anson Wainwright - Firstly your next in action on Saturday when you fight Sherman Williams. What do you know about him?

Manuel Charr - He�s an experienced fighter, he did a lot more fights than me. But I am not so interested in opponents, I have to beat them all. I need to win!

Anson Wainwright - If you beat Williams do you intend to use that as a spring board to fighting some of the big names at Heavyweight?

Manuel Charr - I�ll fight everybody. Names and records are not interesting at all. I wanna be going up and so, once again - I have to beat them all!!!

Anson Wainwright - Can you tell us a little about your fighting style? What are your strengths & what do you hope to improve on?

Manuel Charr - I have a great heart for fighting, my strength is my will. My heart is like an Arabian horse!

Priest performs exorcism at stadium

A Roman Catholic priest has taken extreme steps to improve his favourite football team's results, performing an exorcism at their stadium.

Belgian side Racing Genk have won only two of 11 games this season, and find themselves just one point above the relegation zone.

The Belgian Cup holders' poor run of form roused Don Angelo, and Italian clergyman of over 30 years, into action.

He performed an exorcism at the club's Cristal Arena in an attempt to "drive the devil out", pouring holy water onto the pitch.

Don Angelo said fans should not expect miracles, but hoped players could take to the field with less fear.

On the day of the exorcism, club president Harry Lemmens resigned.

The move has prompted a negative response from some church representatives, including Cardinal Godfried Danneels, the Archbishop of Brussels.

Cardinal Danneels said: "I imagine that some Catholics have got the wrong idea."
