But Ahmed Muhamed Dhore, a Somalian who claims he is 112 years old, said he had realised a "dream" by marrying a 17-year-old bride.

Dhore – who says he was born in 1897, the year that Queen Victoria celebrated her diamond jubilee – already has 13 children by five wives, but said he would like more with his newest, Safiya Abdulle.

Hundreds of people attended the extraordinary ceremony this week in Guriceel, in the region of Galguduud. "Today God helped me realise my dream," Dore said. He and his new wife, who is almost a century his junior, are from the same village in Somalia, he said, adding that he had waited for her to grow up to propose. He says his children and two other wives agreed to the marriage, as did Abdulle's parents.

"I didn't force her, but used my experience to convince her of my love, and then we agreed to marry," the groom said. The bride's family said she was "happy with her new husband". Somali adolescent girls are often married off to older men.

Dhore has 114 children and grandchildren. His oldest son is 80 and three of his wives have died. Last week I wrote about how I was looking forward to driving in Lebanon again. I even mentioned that there were a couple of places in the world that might be more dangerous to drive in. I was wrong, dear reader - so very, very wrong. I'd forgotten just how "out there" driving in Lebanon can be. It's in a league of its own.

I think the most crucial aspect is control of the middle lane. Technically, there is no middle lane. It's not like Moscow, where every boulevard had a lane that ran straight down the middle, designated for the sole use of party apparatchiks. Oh no, Lebanon is not that organised and, besides, everyone would ignore it.

No Lebanese driver worth his salt will sit for an instant behind a car that he can in some way overtake. Clapped-out old Mercedes-Benzes, used as taxis, play "chicken" with flashy Range Rovers and Land Cruisers to see who will blink first, and try to barge back into their lane.

Size is important in Lebanese driving. This is the only country I can think of where owning a Hummer actually makes sense. The bigger your vehicle, the more clout you have when trying to smash your way through the traffic chaos.

It's not bad manners blatantly to cut somebody off or drive along the pavement to get ahead in a static traffic queue – it's just what's expected.

The freakiest thing you can do as a motorist in Beirut is to wave someone in or, God forbid, let a pedestrian cross. They look at you with an air of total confusion that rapidly turns into suspicion. "Why are you doing this?" I can see them think. They glower at you as if they've just been flashed at by a ladyboy.

Then there's the horn. This must be honked constantly, although a subtle knowledge of basic "hornish" would be useful. There are the communal taxi services that beep at every pedestrian in an "I'm here if you don't fancy walking ?" kind of way. And there's the basic "Get out of the flaming way" beep. The "Why has everybody stopped? Get moving!" beep is legally compulsory in any traffic jam. Then there are subtler beeps like "Check that chick out" or "We're young and in our first Lamborghini" or even "My car might be rubbish, but I can beep more than any of you." As I write this, a cacophony of "hornish" is blaring into my room on the 10th floor in West Beirut.

But all that is just driving in Beirut. I took a gorgeously scenic road over Mount Lebanon and down into the Beqaa Valley. The main Beirut-to- Damascus route is widely acknowledged to be the most dangerous stretch of road anywhere in the world, where huge, overloaded trucks overtake each other on hairpin bends and hammer down the steep inclines with adrenalin for brake pads. The drive, however, was wonderful. True, I was actually forced off into the ditch twice by out-of-control minibuses, but the views were sublime.

At an army roadblock high above the town of Zahle, I was forced to take a soldier to Baalbek. I wanted to mooch about, so I decided to scare him into leaving the car. I roared down into the Beqaa, overtaking like a Frenchman on acid and paying even less heed to traffic signs than do the Lebanese. My passenger didn't even blink. Indeed, he spent the time laughing away on his mobile. I eventually changed tack and got rid of him by putting on "Safety Dance" by Men Without Hats, very loudly and on a loop. He was unable to talk on the phone any more and was slowly going crazy. I screeched off in what I thought to be quite a cool cloud of dust, but he didn't even glance my way. I need a tank. En fait Khomeyni (et Khameneï après lui) est un révolutionnaire mais pas dans le sens que l'on croit...

Traditionnellement dans le chiisme il y a une institution comparable à l'église chrétienne dans le sens où l'on on a une organisation pyramidale avec des étudiants en théologie, des licenciés en théologie, des masters en théologie, etc. et en haut de la pyramide on a des (plusieurs, pas un seul) sortent de docteurs en théologie. C'est ce qu'on appelle les "grands ayatollahs". Pour être grand ayatollah, il faut avoir publié un traité de théologie (une thèse) et être reconnu par des disciples (élèves) en grand nombre. Dans ce système le grand ayatollah n'avait pas de rôle politique, bien au contraire : depuis plusieurs siècles les religieux chiites optaient pour un éloignement de la politique dans la mesure où ils vivaient en environnement politique hostile (sunnite).

Khomeyni a été grand ayatollah selon la méthode décrite ci-dessus, somme toute, de manière assez légitime. Le problème c'est que la thèse qu'il a écrite (et qui l'a rendu célèbre et légitime) allait à l'encontre de ce système traditionnel. En effet, il y définit la wilayat al faqih, le règne du juris-consult comme on le traduit habituellement. La république islamique d'Iran est une façon d'appliquer cette thèse. Cette thèse existait avant Khomeyni mais ce dernier la remet au goût du jour dans une forme assez absoliutiste ce qui modifie progressivement de la tradition chiite. Khomeyni est révolutionnaire dans cette optique : il rompu avec une tradition multiséculaire qui éloignait les clercs de la scène politique.

Il est même doublement révolutionnaire parce qu'il a modifié la tradition chiite qui voulait qu'un grand ayatollah soit admis parmi ses pairs sur la base de sa connaissance et de son influence théologiques. En effet, Khomeyni a désigné son successeur (Khameneï) à l'encontre de toute la tradition chiite : la thèse de Khamaneï, censée lui donné le grade de grand ayatollah, n'est parue qu'après que Khameneï ait succédé à Khomeyni en tant que guide suprême de la République islamique d'Iran.

Il y a donc un "pêché originel" de l'actuel régime qui peut expliquer beaucoup de chose : Khameneï n'est pas très légitime dans le rôle qu'il tient. Cela peut expliquer beaucoup de chose sur la lutte interne dont Moussavi (le nouveau Che Gevara de la planète Twitter :-) n'est que la partie visible.

Pour aller plus loin, il faut savoir que la République islamique (joumhouriya al islamiya) est **une** façon d'appliquer la traduction khomeyniste de la Wilayat al Faqih. Une autre façon de mettre en oeuvre cette thèse serait le Gouvernement islamique (houkouma al islamiya) qui, elle, met de côté l'aspect républicain (oui, je blague pas) de l'actuel régime pour le remplacer par un aspect beaucoup plus autoritaire de pouvoir absolu du Faqih (juris-consult). Il semble qu'Ahmadinejad soit disciple d'un grand ayatollah Mesbah-Yazdi qui défend la thèse du Gouvernement islamique (à ce sujet, je n'ai pas trouvé mieux que Libé malheureusement)

Donc lorsqu'on se focalise sur l'attitude verbale d'Ahmadinejad vis-à-vis d'Israël ou sur sa volonté d'acquérir l'arme nucléaire, en fait on on oublie le problème qui me paraît le plus grave. A mon sens, c'est dans la volonté d'établir un pouvoir absolu qui pose problème. Car finalement, malgré les apparences, il y a aujourd'hui des gardes-fou dans la République islamique (régime républicain malgré tout) qu'il n'y aurait pas dans un Gouvernement islamique (absolu).

Pour mieux connaître le chiisme, deux livres :
- Henry Corbin : Histoire de la philosophie islamique (Poche, Folio, Essais)
- Vali Nasr: Le renouveau chiite (Demopolis)

Celui de Corbin est historique et philosophique, parfois très idéaliste.
