Hariri to Re-elect Berri as Parliament Speaker 'Unconditionally'

Hariri to Re-elect Berri as Parliament Speaker 'Unconditionally'

18/06/2009

Unlike his so-called "allies" within the March 14 alliance, the head of the Future movement MP Saad Hariri is set to "unconditionally" back the re-election of Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri for another term.

A member of the alliance told Lebanese daily As-Safir on Thursday that the Future bloc will vote to re-elect Speaker Nabih Berri, noting that Hariri takes into consideration Lebanon's political structure.

The source emphasized that there are serious contradictions among March 14 members with regard to the re-election of Berri that Christians in the majority "completely reject" if it is implemented "unconditionally."

Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea and the head of the Phalange party Amin Gemayel have publicly announced their refusal to renew for Berri, calling for a "rotation of power" or at least for some pre-election "guarantees," a condition rejected by their allies before the opposition.

Meanwhile, MP Saad Hariri expressed his desire Wednesday that the new government would represent all sections of the Lebanese society. "I hope the next government would include everybody and would be capable of working," he said.

Hariri said he is not shying away from the premiership job. "Four years back I lacked experience. Today, however, Saad Hariri is different than Saad Hariri four years ago," the young MP told Newsweek magazine.
