Default Gender Equality - 11th May 2009

The UNICEF statement on gender equality, particularly on gender discrimination:

"Discrimination robs girls and women of the the power to make decisions, to earn a living and to be free from violence, abuse and exploitation. Often it deprives them of any legal protection.
...
By recognizing and addressing discrimination against girls and women, success in the fight against all forms of discrimination -- class, race, ethnicity and age -- will become more likely, and more lasting. We have learned that entire societies develop when girls and women are enabled to be fully contributing community members."

Gender equality is a highly debated issue, and often interpreted in various ways.

What does it mean to you? How do you see the role of women and men in society? Do you support granting the women equal rights, on the fields of education, employment, marital issues, political life?

On the personal level, as a man how do you treat women/ your wife? Do you give her equal voice, do you support her aspirations?

As a woman how are you treated by men, do you feel yourself oppressed, or did you face any discrimantion?
