The proper ruling would have been for him to be sentenced for jail for 10-15 years or so, and not get acid thrown at his face as retribution.

This "eye for an eye" notion is so horrid despite it being part of islamic teachings. The laws that worked a thousand years earlier are no longer valid in our present. The muslim scholars better do a gathering and renovate some of their teachings (though I guess they will face the dilemma of the Quran being a sacred book and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad being the direct words of God, beliefs which I respect). At the very least, let them issue a fatwa declaring this notion as more of a moral verse rather than to be applied to the letter.
