TYRE, Lebanon • Israeli warplanes made low-altitude passes over southern Lebanon yesterday, in defiance of a UN ceasefire resolution, Lebanese police said.
Six aircraft violated Lebanese airspace from 10 am (0700 GMT), swooping low over the port cities of Sidon and Tyre where they caused sonic booms, police said.
The planes also overflow the Bint Jbeil region, a stronghold of the Hezbollah group, they said. Israeli warplanes have violated Lebanese airspace in the past two weeks on a near-daily basis, but yesterday’s overpasses were lower in altitude and caused sonic bangs. Israel has drawn intense international criticism by continuing over flights after the August 14, 2006 ceasefire based on a UN resolution that ended last year's 34-day war against Hezbollah. Meanwhile, Israeli President Shimon Peres said yesterday tensions between the Jewish state and Syria had declined after reports of an Israeli air raid against its neighbor this month. Peres cautioned against "rumors and speculation" but did not comment during a news conference on reports that Israel may have targeted weapons headed for Lebanon's Hezbollah group or a suspected nuclear site.

Israeli warplanes made low-altitude passes over Southern Lebanon on Tuesday, in defiance of the United Nations cease-fire resolution that ended the summer 2006 war, Lebanese security officials said. Six aircraft violated Lebanese airspace starting at 10:00 a.m., swooping low and breaking the sound barrier over the port cities of Sidon and Tyre, police said.
